Today, after buying a cup of coffee, I got a series 2006 $1 in change. The serial is G00000487*.....yup, a star note, and a super low SN. It's pretty beat up, which is kind of a bummer, but I'm going to hang onto it, regardless. I'll post a pic this afternoon, when I get home from work.
according to www.uspapermoney.info, your note was printed in April 2008 and that district for FW issuance has 6,912,000 total notes printed in 2 seperate printings its a star Its a low serial and its not i bad shape I would say its a keeper!
Couple of finds from this week. Semi-low serial, repeater and a star note. The star note was found in a new uncirculated consecutive strap with the BEP paper strap still on it. The notes were B (New York) district and you'll notice that the star note is a J (Kansas City) district. I would've guessed they'd use B star notes in a B strap. I also came across some overinks that I posted separately: http://www.cointalk.com/t128108/
they can be worth a premium certainly. i keep all that i find regardless of current value. They are quickly disapearing! Any book that lists values and printings will give you an idea of value over face. The better the grade, the higher a potential value. www.uspapermoney.info is a great site for listing printages and other sites also exist that mimick the same data.
Most non-star $1 notes in that time range are going to be low value, maybe 2x-4x face in AU to ChCU grades raw. Some notable $1 star notes with potential high values to look out for from the 1970s-80s: Fr. 1908C* - Series 1974 Philadelphia [Book price: VF $3 / ChCU $20] Fr. 1908D* - Series 1974 Cleveland [Book price: VF $13 / ChCU $55] Fr. 1908I* - Series 1974 Minneapolis [Book price: VF $17.50 / ChCU $35] Fr. 1911C* - Series 1981 Philadelphia [Book price: VF $5 / ChCU $140] Fr. 1912K* - Series 1981-A Dallas [Book price: VF $475 / ChCU $1,250] Fr. 1913H* - Series 1985 St. Louis [Book price: VF $475 / ChCU $1,350] Fr. 1914F* - Series 1988 Atlanta [Book price: VF $400 / ChCU $1,400] Fr. 1914K* - Series 1988 Dallas [Book price: --- / ChCU $30] Fr. 1914L* - Series 1988 San Francisco [Book price: --- / ChCU $15] Fr. 1915H* - Series 1988-A (DC sheet fed) St. Louis [Book price: VF $7 / ChCU $20] For the Fr. 1917 web notes, blocks tend to vary in price, but most notes from each district command widely varied prices: Fr. 1917A - Series 1988-A (DC - web fed) Boston [Book price: VF $15 / ChCU $45] Fr. 1917B - Series 1988-A (DC - web fed) New York [Book price: VF $500 / ChCU $1,300] Fr. 1917F* - Series 1988-A (DC - web fed) Atlanta [Book price: VF $800 / ChCU $1,400] Keep in mind that the above values are only a guide as reported in A Guide Book of United States Paper Money 2nd Ed. (Official Red Book) by Arthur & Ira Friedberg
Thank you Moonshine, and Daggarjon for the replies. Yup, I'm quite happy to have it. This note is now one of my favorites in my small collection.
This past weekend I picked up a Barr star note. I got it at a yard sale for $2.00 it was it rough shape
Joseph Barr was secretary of the treasury for about a month in 1968-1969. His name appears on 1963-B and at the time it was speculated that the notes with his name on them would become rare but I believe they printed printed over 450 million of them. http://www.uspapermoney.info/serials/f1963bs.html Star notes are replacement notes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_note Maybe someone can explain it a little better.
Pulled an interesting strap today. It had a number of older notes. Many of which were AU or close to CU. 1 x 1969A 2 x 1988A 3 x 1993 22 x 1995 (no webs or 295's...2 sets of 3 consecutive notes) 8 x 1999 2 x 2001
