Hi all, I would appreciate any help in regards to grading this 1911 barber Dime as I am a new collector. I also would like an explanation as to why you graded the coin the way you did so I can build a better knowledge and understanding in the field of coin grading.

    Thanks

This will most likely grade F-12.

I can see it maybe making F-12.
    I'm more comfortable with VG-10.

What's your evidence for it being cleaned?

TPG grade F-12, maybe a VG-10 because of the darkness of toning.

My only real concern is what's going on in the right obverse field (scratch?).

Regardless, that's a nice collector coin that would look great in an album surrounded by similar-looking coins!

Oh, and welcome to the forum! :)

Yes, I think the coin is scratched. And thanks for the welcome!

I'd have no problem with an F-12 on this one. I don't see any evidence of cleaning.

I started to put down VG-10 but I am pretty sure about F-12.

    Edit: Welcome to the forum!

I guess that's just wear. I mistook the lines on the devices as cleaning lines.

    Welcome to CoinTalk, Wayne.

    F-12 Details Net VG-10

Allow me to be the first to answer the second portion of your question.

Per the ANA Grading Standards for Barber Dimes:

That pretty well describes your coin which would indicate it may grade F-12. But with the scratches I knocked it down a grade to VG-10.

Hope my explanation answered your question.

Alright let me take a crack at giving you a general explanation of why this coin is graded what it is. I'm going to explain this simply as you said you were a new collector lets take baby steps.

    1. We can clearly see that this coin has been circulated so it falls anywhere between 1-58 on the grading scale (Poor to almost uncirculated)
    2. Now we need to narrow it down, an AU coin should as the name implies look almost uncirculated, as this coin has no luster it can be eliminated from the higher circulated grades.
    3. The coin although worn is not almost a washer which means it's better than poor or almost good.
    4. WE can see on the coin that although there is wear some of the high point (such as liberty on the head band) are still visible, meaning that the coin falls into the fine to extra fine.
    5. the hair on liberty is almost entirely gone as well as the detail on the wreath on the reverse which leads us to eliminate it from the Very fine or extra fine categories.
    6. VIOLA! with everything else eliminated we can safely say the coin is a Fine coin, in this case the lower level of Fine being a F-12. (as opposed to a "high fine" of F-15)

Hope this little write up helps!

F-12 was my frist guess in my head....after reading everyone elses grades VG-10 does seem a real possibility too.
