I just got my 2010 Mint Silver Proof Set today, and I'm pretty geeked. Most of the coins appear to be flawless (I'm still photographing them), however, the Fort Hood quarter appears to have a scratch of some sort on it. I only noticed it when photographing it, and can only see it when it's at a certain angle, but, it's definitely there. It seems like I waited ages for the coins to ship, and it's my first set, but, I'm wondering if I should send them back for replacement? Photos attached: Bigger size can be seen here: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4087/4972696852_a4ff0607bd_o.jpg Opinions? Do I keep it, or send it back?
If it bothers you enough to post the photos on here (which isn't easy!) then I think you should send it back. It obviously isn't what you are looking for, you paid for it and you should be happy with it.
those are very neat pictures i had a yellowstone AU everything in my book collection but i left the book open and it got like rusted i'm not sure why has a little yellow spot in the middle of the coin :'( im going to have to replace it.
I have a little hairline scratch on the obverse of my kennedy half between the E and R in Liberty.... its a hairline scratch. I also noticed on the obverse of the Yosemite quarter the lines in GW's hair are much more distinct and vivid than the other four... seems very weird to me. I am not going through the trouble of sending them back as overall the coins in the silver proof set I received are pretty darn good.
I showed my wife the pics and she said "Are you sure that's not lava coming off the top of a volcano?" Gave me a good laugh The rest of the coins seem to be extremely good, so, I think I'll keep them. I'll search around for a PR70 to replace it with.
In years past I'd say, "just order another one", but with the prices that the mint charges today I really can't say (write) that. If it bothers you, send it back and get another. Really is a bummer.
On one hand i think that its a bit much to expect all PR70 coins in each set but looking at that photo i think that is a big enough flaw to justify bringing it back. Does anyone know if the mint charges shipping on a replacement and can you get a cash refund?
The Mint policy is 7 days to return merchandise for replacement, exchange or a full refund for any reason. You have to pay the return shipping and they suggest you also insure parcels. It's all on the bottom of the invoice in each order and the policy is stated on their web site here
whats to prevent one from buying ten sets and keeping the best set and sending 9 back? or worse you open the sets cherry pick them and make sets with the leftovers and send them back..
NOTHING when there is no household limit on products. That's what people do all the time when they want to cherry pick the best coins and send them in for grading or keep the ones they think are highest possible examples.
But not for these. And I truly wonder how many people actually order these sets and surreptitiously slit the seam with a knife and pop out the good ones and send back the rest.
