Can anyone help me ID this cob / date 1644/84? I just added this pic for a better assessment. It was found at an old boat yard - I found a 1739 half real Mexico mint about 50 ft away as-well as several 1800s coins through-out the area. It's just about 1" inch. I am not sure if the cross side of a cob has the date. On the cross side it looks like a double dating perhaps. It's difficult to see.. The spacing of what looks like 1 6 4 4 and then it looks like 1 6 84 4 - I may be mistaken though that this is even a date.. On the other side I see a #2 and other #s here and there... I am looking to get a picture of this cob in better condition as to compare - Is it the tic tac toe kind or pillars and waves - also if I can obtain a date and reale value that would be great. Thank you in advanced - I am new to this Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/blogs/nike/401-can-anyone-help-me-id-cob-date-1644-84.html#ixzz0yxmOCiz3
The dates for cobs of the dates you ask about were typically found on the outer edges of the coin on the overse - the shield side. But what you have there, I have no idea. I cannot even identify it as a cob. It could be anything.
Often times we want to see something so bad, you begin to imagine something that is really not there at all. I do not know what to make of this, perhaps it was part of a concretion (sea salvaged) at one time and has lost some identity. hmmmmm....
Is it even silver? Per the supplied images, am I supposed to perceive a cross on one side of the specimen?
Thank you for looking. I wanted to add, a local jeweler suggested that if I wanted to determine weather its silver or not to put it into a cup of bleach - if it turns black - it's silver. So I did and it turned black. More info here: I thought it was slag too until I cleaned it up at home and saw what looked to be the cross. I google cobs and saw a few that looked very close in shape and size. Some of the other old coins I have found at this site are very worn. I access these areas at low tide. I have found civil war buttons, musket balls, and tokens, at this site - so I truly feel this is some type of genuine currency - and ready for this - I had found another one of these and left it behind thinking its slag. Does anyone see any numbers on this or is it me? Thank you for the education here.
nike - I used to collect Spanish colonial so I am quite familiar with it. But I can see nothing on that item of yours that resemebles anything. It is completly unidentifiable.
