I was looking at the U.S. Mint web site and i noticed they still had the 2009 silver quarter proof set for $29.99 and with six silver quarters the melt value for the coins are over $21 melt. I think that's the closest i have see the mint sell its products to the melt value.
That's $29.95 plus shipping costs, another $4.95 = $34.90 coinflation.com, currently put's 6 quarters (90% silver) at $21.56 (Currently on kitco.com silver Ask price $19.93/oz.)
If you just buy one set, yes it might not be worth it.. but if you are already buying coins from the mint and add it in with a other order or you buy 10 sets its not a bad deal.
Indeed, that is the shipping price for 1 unit, but if you are buying 10 or more units of marked up product just to acquire silver bullion, I would suggest that there's another way to make bullion investments (which may be more liquid than collector version proof quarters) with that $300+ (you suggested you were buying other Mint products so your actual expense would be greater than $300) by picking up a tube of .999 fine bullion ASEs (vs. 90% silver quarters) from a bullion dealer or coin shop. Also worth nothing that the US Mint's shipping policy will automatically upgrade you to expedited shipping for free is you buy any products with precious metals in an order that amounts over $300. So that could work in your favor if placing a large order. You may not need to order other products if you spend enough on these items, but I would call Mint Customer Service to verify before placing an order.
I wasn't saying to use it as a way to invest in silver bullion, i was just saying its a good buy since it is the item with the least amount of numismatic markup on the entire site.
I would like to also add that if silver keeps going up at its current rate the numismatic markup might almost disappear before this mint notices since i don't think they watch proof sets as close as gold so it might be a good item to keep an eye on.
Oh, I'm sure the Mint have their eyes on all their products. If they don't, folks like you, DO! and the sets won't last long if that's the case. :thumb:
That is fairly close to spot for a proof set! That said, and to keep things in perspective, a greater than 30% markup on bullion (if you include shipping) isn't exactly a good deal. If you want to play the silver market, there are much better ways to do it, IMO. Respectfully...Mike
The mint is still selling these sets and they now have a melt value of $23.70 according to Coinflation http://www.coinflation.com/coins/silver_calc.php
