What's the best thing to do with "low value" coins from multiple countries that I'm not interested in keeping? Coin dealer? I'd like to see them go to people who want/need them for their collections, even if they aren't worth much...

    Thanks!

Bag them by the pound and sell them in the classified section of Coin Talk.

    or

Use them as a prize in a contest.

Give them to a kids' club (scouts, school-based) or a local coin club that holds events for young (or otherwise impecunious) numismatists and wannabe's. There's more to collecting than shelling out for big-ticket rarities!

All those are great ideas, better than mine. I was going to say snap some pictures - roughly count and vaguely describe the lot by weight and or number of coins and put it up on eBay.. people love those.

Contest is one thought but be courteous with what you dump on other collectors.

Another idea, if you sell coins on eBay, is to consider sending a freebie in your package with the coins your buyers purchase. Free stuff is often a big hit with buyers and gets you some nice emails and/or feedback comments.

Off topic, but I remember trick or treating as a kid and some guy thought it was funny to drop a roll of pennies into my bag and tear the bottom out of it.. I guess I was tricked.

Give away to kids. Or swap with other collectors.

"Unwanted coins"? An oxymoron--like "excess cash."

Find a Boy Scout Troop in your area, and give them the coins. One of the Merit Badges they can earn is for coin-collecting.

I guess I am too cynical - and do not believe there are any kids collecting coins who have less funds then I do. Maybe that is why coins pass from generation to generation without any "cash in" because there may never be any. I bought proof sets in the 60/70s for the same price I can buy them today - after you figure inflation - I lost big time.

Show me a kids club that is puffering the the honest trade and I may reconsider.

Why not trade for other coins you want ? Or you don't want them just for the low value ?

If there's any silver in them keep it. Some coins are worth keeping because there unique. I say fold them in a 2x2 and sort them by year. Do a show and tell.

Funny story - I was in Denmark visiting friends during their version of Halloween (can't remember what it was called). At the time we did more drinking than anything else and the guy I was staying with wasn't prepared for the kids coming by. He gave some of them change instead of treats, claiming that was what he got when he was a kid. He gave it to them and the kids looked at him like "you have got to be kidding me?" We ended up leaving and going to the bar after that first group of kids.

  19. Or, you could just mail them to me, that would work :)

I take my unwanted coins to shows and see if I can do some swapping.

This would be the most logical choice (and path I'd rather take), but since I'm brand new at this the thought of trading them is really daunting. To be honest, I guess I'm worried at either being laughed at or being taken advantage of. I guess its because I really don't know very much of anything yet.
