Star light Star bright A few are missing tonight Should this go under the "error coins" group? Had to angle the shot to capture the luster. How about a grade? THANKS! (first pic post, btw - hope it works)
Looks like a weak die striking of the coin or that part of the die could have gotten junk in that area causing the missing stars. Its an interesting coin. I dont know if i've ever heard or seen that large an "error" on that type of coin before. I wouldn't know whether to call it an error or not. Another idea is that someone di this to the coin intentionally to make it seem rarer. Whatever the case, it seems like a nice EF-40.
looks messed with IMO. Why would the rev be alot better than the obv?Someone must have eroded the stars off and the face off the coin, to simulate die problems.
I would say the coin has definitely been harshly cleaned. The question I have would be if that process helped to remove the stars or not. Although I have never seen a similar example, that doesn't mean it is not possible that the coin was issued this way.
I still see traces of the stars, a weak strike?, filled die?? I would say nothing real speacial in the error field, but I wouldnt know. Send the photo to some of the error dealers.
Thanks to all the replies. I will post to the "error" group as well. IRL this coin doesn't (to my untrained eye) appear to be cleaned. A local coin dealer examined it as well and didn't mention cleaning. He also didn't know if it's a bad strike or carefully removed stars for whatever reason. I may never know where the stars went.
Hi, There is evidence of part of a star being there. I lean very strongly toward a filled die strike. If it was major wear, I suspect that the denticles would be very worn as well. Have Fun, Bill
