Half eagle grade opinions

yes I would also say AU cleaned. And Julzboi661, if you don't mind cleaned coins that is your opionion, I also don't mind cleaned coinsw as long is they were not damaged of altered in there cleaning, I would not want a coin that has been dipped or wizzed.

whizzing isn't cleaning, and shouldn't be considered such. it is considered scamming.also, i'll buy any of your "cleaned junk" that you want to sell me. all it'll do is help my collection more.

 

I'm almost afraid to ask but what do you guy's think of this Half Eagle.
I purchased it about five yrs ago from Harlen J Burke for $175 and it was advertised as an AU coin.
Do you agree with their grade? if not why

i'll go with an AU-53 on the second one. Why? because of the hair over Liberty's ear. it looks alot flatter than most of the other hairlines.

 

I'll go AU-50, becuase of the hair above the cornet, and on the eagle's neck area.

 

I agree,that spot behind the ear is a good benchmark for judging ware,thanks for cluing me in on that.

Whizzing is cleaning....its a form or taking off a layer of dirt or metal off of the coin to show a cleaner and "nicer" coin....its cleaning for sure...

Easy my friend, I understand!, If you want, do an experiment, get a coin and send if of to get graded, a coin like the above or others you seem that fit the mold.....A cleaned coin can sometimes be hard to detect,others not so hard , others just plain simple.when in real dought, send to grader, thats why they are in the buisness.

 

I think TPG defiantly has its place but I hope we not getting to a point
Where every coin is suspect just because it's not certified.
If I’m buying a high-grade key date coin valued at hundreds or even thousands (I wish) obviously I want it graded by one of the big two (sorry speedy).
I think many collectors of modest means enjoy acquiring nice coins in the under 100$ range, and spending 30-50$ to get it graded is just not practical or economically prudent.
I hope we don't get to the point of never being able to hold a nice silver coin(by the edges) because they have all been slabbed.

 

I sure hope not...I have a good many raw coins....I do wonder when a rare coin in a high grade is offer raw....any collector would know that it would be better to slab that....

I know ANACS is just as credible as the other two,for whatever reason they don't seem to have the name recognition among casual collectors.
SGS now thats another story

 

my 2 favorite grading services are NGC and ANACS. i prefer both of their slabs to PCGS and ANACS does a better job with morgans IMO.

 

No argument here. I think they're the TOP one because they are flexable enough to grade those with a little damage. Specialization leads to extinction, it's as simple as that...

Do you want to know why....here is what I heard.
Back some years ago the grading Co. started to overgrade....ANACS came out and said that they had and that they were going to be tighter....the other 2 (PCGS and NGC) didn't...they just tighten up and didn't say anything....
Since ANACS came out they took the rap--many collectors that had seen the overgrading and then heard it just didn't think they would go back to grading right...that is why many of the collecting world puts them down on the list.

With all due respect, you may not care, but that doesn't mean others don't. Quite to the contrary, the market price for gold is clearly higher for gold with original surfaces. Do you dispute this?

Personally, I value original surfaces more than any other single factor. Your opinion may vary, but I don't curse you for expressing it. I would appreciate the same respect...Mike

 

As to someomne who stated that some high dollar coins that are raw and for sale, I can asure you theres a problem with it, other wise it sure as hech would have been slabed!,(dealers).Good example.......4 years ago I bought a 1836-O Bust half, a rare date in high grade, I payed the $2,300.00 for it, It was raw whan I bought it, I called the seller,(John Paul Sarosi Inc.)and he assured me the coin was ok, when I got it, it had a scratch on the front!!(not stated in the add), I called him back about it saying that I wish to have it graded, but with the scratch it would for sure be down graded, he said "I know!, thats whay I didnt do it!"so I bought the coin at full retail even though it would tech. be a lower grade, Dummyme!, I should have returned it but didnt being such a rare coin, later, 2 years, It was graded and lowered and lost my BUTT!. Lesson learned!!. :goof:

 

My favorite TPG's are PCGS and ANACS. just IMO I've agreed with most of there slabed coins I've seen......then again I'm a pretty crappy grader :desk:
