He also makes all his buyer's identities private, you know, to protect THEIR  (yeah righht) identities.

The seller bought items from "jinghuashei", then switched to private listings in May... two red flags that any buyer should be aware of. The problem is, there are hundreds of sellers doing the same thing right now, and getting away with it. And it has placed thousands of unmarked replicas in the hands of collectors who think they have a genuine piece.

I haven't heard back from the seller yet... wonder if I will.

I really appreciate the good points that have been brought up on this forum. I guess I'll have to be much more vigilant about who I'm dealing with in the future; kind of sad that it has to come to that. I'd always thought that someone would only go through the effort to replicate a really high end coin only.

Excellent detective work, taxidermist, usc96, and jloring!

There have been counterfeit coins since the earliest of times. As a matter of fact, even some "counterfeit's" are quite rare. Unfortunately, not this one.

    Welcome to the forum!

What ever you do don't pay. And just looking at positive feed is not enough - there are plenty of un-informed buyers on ebay. And I personally avoid all sellers who make the auctions private. For a trade dollar as mentioned - keep to NGC or PCGS coins. Or work with some trusted dealer who knows there stuff.

According to toolhaus, he sold a counterfeit Morgan. Appears he refunded the money when the buyer called him on it, but seller got mad that he got a neg feedback from it. That buyer replied that seller refunded the money, then resold the counterfeit. Interesting feedback!

If he resold the counterfeit then he isn't a reputable seller and you shouldn't feel bad about making a retraction on a fake coin!

It's your money and you have a right to purchase the real deal and not a passed off fake. If he has a no return policy and gets called on it and won't refund then I guess there is no honor among thieves.

All I can say is don't feel bad about not letting someone rob you because that's what it would be.

Thanks so much to all. You helped me learn a good lesson from this, and it didn't cost me anything! (also, I never knew you could look at previous purchases that the seller had made; I'll start doing that, though). I'll be more cautious in the future and definitely owe you all a round. I never heard back from the seller, but eBay sent me this:

Thanks for your interest in this listing:

    180556277695 - 1875 CC TRADE DOLLAR

We're sorry to tell you that the item isn't available for purchase anymore. We removed the listing because it likely fell into one of these three categories:

-- The listing doesn't follow eBay guidelines.
-- The item isn't allowed on eBay or can only be listed under certain conditions.
-- The listing contains pictures or words that may have violated copyright or trademark rights.

This is disappointing for everyone, but sometimes it's an action we have to take to protect you as a buyer.

Important: If you won the item and haven't paid for it yet, you don't need to complete the transaction. If you've already paid for the item, we encourage you to contact the seller to get more information about the transaction. If you don't receive the item, your purchase price plus original shipping may be covered by the eBay resolution process:
    http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/resolving-problems.html

We're sorry for the inconvenience. eBay still has lots of other great deals. Just go to http://www.ebay.com to shop. We hope to see you soon.

    Thank you,

    eBay

Yes it did, stealer! I couldn't have done it without you all, that's for sure. I'm kind of curious about this jing individual myself, usc96...

The seller may not know it was a fake when he posted it. However, his knowledge may account for the low price you bought it for; were you the only bidder? He may have received multiple messages from other eBayers questioning its authenticity; if it was easy enough for members here, it would have been equally so for veteran eBayers. If his listing did not acknowledge it as a counterfeit, you should contact him prior to paying with your concerns. If he isn't cooperative, I would report him for a fraudulent listing, and eBay will take it from there.

Edit: guess I should have read page 2 before I posted, lol... :/ Either way the info's still good.

I am curious about the one thing in this thread that is not about the coin.

How did you get the lettering upside down ? Is that a pic, edited and pasted ? Or is there another way to do that ?

    Thanks,

    gary
