Hi all, I'm a first time poster but long time reader. I just won a 1875 CC trade dollar on eBay (the timer was winding down and I got excited) for $125. I don't have the coin in hand, so I'm relying on the fairly crappy posted pics. Just wondering if anyone could comment on whether they feel this thing is real vs fake based on the images. Thanks so much in advance!
I wonder why a silver coin has a bronze rim? The entire coin's color is questionable. A highly counterfeited coin. I'm no expert, but it seems iffy to me.
Shoot, I was really worried about that. I noticed the "no returns" line too late. While I haven't paid for this yet, it wouldn't feel right not doing the "honorable" thing and going through with the sale, though I really don't want a fake coin either. What to do, what to do. I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks, Captainkirk! Good to be here officially.
Hey umopapisdnpuaq, I've been looking for a trade dollar for my collection recently too. I agree with the others, it looks fake. I'm not sure how to resolve the dilemma you're in, maybe try emailing the seller and tell him that the coin is fake? If he's an honorable seller he will understand
Do not pay for it ! I dont care how bad you feel ,if it was advertised as the real deal it is a lie. If it was advertised as a fake, copy ect... then that is exactly what you got. Post the link & Ill even report it.
Wow, I'd explain your position to him. I had a buyer place a bid on an auction for a coin. IT clearly showed that the coin was ms 64 but he bid on it thinking it was a 65 coin. Even though I was upset, I figured if I had done the same I would have liked him to let me out of the deal. He offered to pay and take it as a lesson learned. I canceled the sell. After all I figure it would save us both shipping cost if he returned it. What I'm saying is try to explain the situation to the seller and see if you can both agree on canceling the sell. What do you have to lose other than $125 bucks.
Yeah, you might have a point there, budgood. The link is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180556277695&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT Darn! I was really excited about having my first trade dollar, too (I guess that makes two of us, Stealer!)
I really appreciate everyone's feedback. As if this hobby weren't tough enough (I'm horrible at grading coins), now there are fakes to deal with, too! I'll email the seller to see what he says. Thanks again, all.
Another thing, don't buy trade dollars out of NGC, PCGS (maybe ANACS and ICG too) slabs! And even then, the slabs may be fake!
Every one of the past coin listings this seller has had look to be counterfiets IMO, with possibly the exception of the GSA but that is suspect too.
That Trade Dollar is fake! Better to send it back!! Take a small loss as opposed to a regretted purchase!! Be extremely careful while bidding as our urge to get a coin can lead to a possible waste!!
I guess I let myself get deceived by his good feedback score. The scary thing is that there were 23 other bids on it, too. Even if I somehow get stuck buying this thing, I could never sell it to someone else knowing that it was a fake (no way I could live with that). Thanks for telling me about the fake slabs, Stealer. Sigh, I might have to find a new hobby! I'll let you all know when I get a response.
Selling counterfeit coins as genuine is a serious violation of eBay rules. Contact eBay and they should cancel the sale. Don't send any money! Best wishes, Peter Anthony www.pandacollector.com
umo, There are innumerable threads on CoinTalk that discuss counterfeits. Use the search feature to search for "counterfeit" and you'll find several threads (including quite a few pertaining to Trade Dollars) that go into detail about why a coin is fake and some of the tell-tale clues to look for.
Eagle's right leg looks a bit weaker compared to the left leg. This is exactly how legs look on my 1873CC replica i got for 2$. I have posted it's photo 2 days ago on this forum, both coins look the same, just different year. The seller bought some questionable morgans and trade dollars, according to his feedback as a buyer. I`d say there is a very low chance this trade dollar is real.
