I have come across two counter stamped large cents. The first is a holed 1853 with "C. Buxton R. Falls. VT" in large letters on the reverse. The second is an 1853 with a small "B.C. English" between one and cent. If anyone has any information on who these folks were it would be greatly appreciated.
Hopefully someone here will be able to help you, but unfortunately I cannot other than to pass along this website of counterstamps: http://historical-americana.com/art/cma.htm If nobody responds here, I would suggest that you either post your request on Yahoo "earlycopper" newsgroup (earlycopper@yahoogroups.com). I suspect that or the PCGS forums should get you a quick answer. Good luck!
The B.C. English counterstamp is listed in Brunk as E-182, but is unattributed. The "Buxton" piece is a new one to me, and isn't in either Brunk or Rulau. I research counterstamps on a regular basis, so will see what I can do for you. Pictures would be very helpful, but not necessary.
To Treashunt: Thanks for the welcome. I joined just this past January, and haven't posted anything until now. I'll have to get on more often, I enjoy the give and take. To The Analog Kid: I did a bit of searching in regard to your counterstamps, but have no answers for you yet. Could you please check your coin again and make sure the city is "R." Falls, Vt. and not "B." Falls. I did a search of all Vermont town names (old and new) and the only location with Falls in the name is Bellows Falls. In the meantime I'll keep looking.
I will see if I can get pics of some I have. When buying coins I always value these at zero so I have a few in a junk box. I know of nothing about counterstamps, just figured they were all junk.
Wow. Thanks for all the information guys. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow (Fri 9/3). these came in in a big lot of large cents and we can't find them to attribute them. I couldn't find anything on either in the references we have at work. Like I said, I'll try to get pictures tomorrow.
Your junk might be worth some money Medoraman, you never know. If you get a chance, post what you have (with pictures if possible) and I'll look into them.
OK. Here are the pics of the counter stamped large cents. Also, I included a stickered Morgan dollar as well as a token that came through the shop today. Any information would be awesome. Never mind. I can't seem to get them to load. I'll have to do my best verbally. First, the sticker is from Oil City in Elko and Winnemucca Nevada. "This $1 good for $1.05 in trade at..." The token is in white metal. On what I assume is the obverse is an eagle. Above reads, "SYMWAO" Below reads "MIAFA" The reverse has what appears to be a barrel and rays below it. Again, the above legend reads "ANTHAR." Below, "SILBA."
BRandM, you were right, it is B Falls. Sorry. Seems that the file of the "English" cent is too large to load up.
Thanks, I'll look into Bellows Falls and see what I can find. By the way, your token is a Ku Klux Klan piece called a Soaring Eagle Token, and was probably issued in the 1920's. The "SILBA ANTHAR" words are apparently short for the Latin (?) phrase "Non silba, sed anthar" that translates to "Not for one's self, but for others" or something similar (my Latin is very poor). "SYMWAO" is an abbreviation for "Spend Your Money With Americans", and "MIAFA" means "Made in America For Americans". I don't know what the symbolism means, but I'm sure you'll get posts from collectors who know more about these pieces than I do. Good luck!
Thanks. I found the KKK token on another site and was kinda freaked by it. Any way, thanks for all the help you guys are giving.
