So, I'm into my 3 penny roll out of a box at the moment and I came across a 1997 VDB Lincoln. It caught my attention based on it's shine. It's has little wear. What caught my attention under scope was the letters VDB by the left shoulder. So what's it worth and why is it hard to find VDB unless it's a wheatie? Thanks for your help.
this one isn't worth anything the vdb is normal on them.... but say if you found a wheat cent with vdb then you ought to be excited, even more so if it's a 1909-S
The U.S. Mint removed the VDB from the reverse of the wheat cent after only a few weeks in 1909. In 1918, the U.S. Mint made the initials even smaller and placed them under Lincoln's shoulder. They have been there ever since. Your 1997 Lincoln cent is therefore normal and, in typical mid to upper uncirculated grades, is worth about 10 cents. Check out your other post-1917 Lincoln cents and I guarantee you you'll find the VDB on those, too. Just look carefully. I always like using a 5X magnifier.
. Gotcha, I have (2) 1909 VDB's that but never saw one on a 1997. As soon as I get a book I gues I can answer these type questions. Thanks again.
I was handed down a 10x Seerite Tripod Magnifer that my Sony camera works great on top. I'll bring out the 1917's and see what's there. Thanks
You're quite welcome. Just make sure you recall that Lincolns 1918 and later have the VDB, so your 1917s won't have any VDB!
Before anyone jumps up and down with a modern cent without the VDB on the shoulder that is suppose to have one( worth a million at least ), this area is many times missing the initials due to die or strike problems.
True, but to my knowledge I've never heard of a filled-die obscuring a VDB being worth anything more than curiosity. There aren't any "valuable" missing VDBs, are there? I've studied Lincolns for years and never heard of anything drawing any monetary value simply because of a missing VDB...
