I do not know if I am alone in my bizarre attraction to old coin folders and albums, but I hit the mother lode today and still have twice as many to pick-up this weekend. All of these were from 1952-1960 and are in VF to New condition. A couple of the albums I was going to bring home today still have IHC's and old Tokens in them so the guy from the estate wanted to investigate their value a little more before settling on a price for those. But I did some research online for the albums I did get today and am very happy with the small price I paid for these fine old albums and books. By the way, the greenish book is the Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins ,Tokens & Paper Money 9th edition from 1960. The little blue post-its are what I priced their values at in used condition, so I made out like a bandit. Although some of the original price stickers are still in some of them and some cost only 40cents when they were brand new.
No, you're not alone. I have quite a few vintage albums, most of which I use. The one pictured is my newest addition, a 1939 Lincoln cent album that as far as I can tell had never been used. The middle page has discolored over time so the corresponding hole marks are color variations and not indentations. Bought this for 25 cents from a local dealer.
Good to know there are others who appreciate vintage ! Since you have been a member here since 2007, I am assuming you are knowledgeable. Would you happen to know approximately when Whitman changed their logo from the eagle to the globe ?
The only vintage album that I am interested in getting is a red album that specifically holds the entire 1-oz Coca-Cola 75th Anniversary silver art bar collection. I have seen one on ebay go for $40 but I passed on it. I did see another one up for auction. I might bid on it if the bid is not too high. I will think about it.
I don't know if you're interested in coin boards of the 30's & 40's, but David Lange of NGC wrote a book about them. I believe he also has done some research on pricing various coin boards and/or albums. You might find some useful information from the link below. http://coincollectingboards.net/ Chris
Those old boards are cool. I have a few, but they all have coins in them. They were filled by my grandfather.
I'm a big fan of old albums also, mainly because you can still use them to get some really spectacular toning from them.
