What do you guy's(and ladies) think this half eagle would grade?
The luster is a little better than what shows up on the scan but to balance that there are many small bagmarks (especially on the observe) that also don't show up.
    1900 p
I'm thinking solid AU because of the luster and absence of ware, but then again thats a biased opinion.

AU would be right in the ballpark.
Maybe EF-45 but maybe its just the scan.

That's a beauty. AU-58, maybe even MS. Scratch that MS, I see a smooth spot on the hair.

It appears to be right behind the eye and third lock over the ear. Here is an example of one with the same wear pattern.

AU 50, cleaned. It would probably be put in a holder as TPGs don't typically care about cleaned coins unless there are hairlines to go with it...Mike

Just curious,What makes you think it was cleaned? from what i can see there are no hairlin scratches.
The light/dark areas are from the 2x2

What made me think it was the area round the stars....its lighter than the rest...that would point to cleaning sometimes....but I'm not good at gold...

why in the h%$L do you people care if a coin is cleaned or not? chances are, if you have a coin older than 1900, it's been cleaned at some point. i am so sick of seing Net grades and this AU CLEANED crap. Any coin you have has been washed at the mint as a blank planchet. so all coins are cleaned. wah. i'm sorry for being an ass, but this is really making me angry. i know some other people are going to come write a narrative but i really dont care. cleaned means nothing. it means that a coin has been subjected to one of the most common practices next to being minted. jesus christ please.

I tend too agree,i think the whole cleaning issue is overemphasized sometimes.
Not saying it shouldn't be a consideration, just my opinion

#1...you need to watch what you say....some people on here don't care for some of the words you post.

Why do we care if a coin has been cleaned or not....I don't think we ever said we did....but it is our job if someone ask what is the grade to tell them all we see....
A cleaned coin is a damaged coin.....it takes part of the coin with the cleaning....and when you take part of the coin....its just not good.

Right.....and we take that into account.
As I said in another post...you need to learn about that---you told me that you read lots...well if you did you would have seen how god NET grades are.
As I said above....a cleaned coin is a damaged coin...but lets go somewhere else...lets say you have a coin with a hole in it....now that is damaged--the grade is XF and the value is $100....now do you think that the coin is really worth that with the hole??....not in a hundred years....so with a hole you take about2-3 points off the grade....now you have F....and the value is $25....that is how you find out the value of a coin that has been damaged---

Not in the same "cents" of the word.....a planchet isn't a coin---

Cleaned does mean something....and you need to learn it...read the PCGS Guide to grading....or the Coin Collectors Survival Manual or search this forum for "why is cleaning bad"

I think some subjects can't be talked about too little....
How many people have come to this forum to ask if it was alright to clean their coins....and if we just said....ah...who cares....it owuld be bad---they would lose and we would lose in one way because cleaned coins would be coming to the market more and more--
Now as you said...the flip makes the coin look dark and light...then I don't see the coin as cleaned---I posted what I saw but you have the coin in hand and can see it better than any of us.

Since you don't care if a coin is cleaned, would you be willing to pay full price for coins that others would discount since they are cleaned? If so I have a list of junk, errr, cleaned coins that I'd be willing to sell.

Yes, I'm being fecitious, but do you get my point? Think of it like this, the price of an original coin is X and the price of the same coin in the same grade, but cleaned is X/2. It is not so much that collectors are discounting cleaned coins 50%, but that the cleaned coin price is the "real" price and collectors are paying a huge (100% more) premium for an original coin. You are right about the huge numbers of 18th century and earlier cleaned coins and that is why collectors put such a premium on original uncleaned surfaces.
