Not that I need something new to collect. But I have pretty much every dollar coin (including most variants) made from 1921 to present. I'm tempted to continue this backward into the Morgan Dollars, but for some reason I just can't do it. It's not that I find them unattractive or anything like that. Maybe it's just a heavy weight of adding another major project. Does anyone else ever feel like this? For those that do collect Morgans, what is it that really grabs you about them? My grandfather left me a 1922 Peace Dollar, I really liked their look, and now have a full set in AU (minus 1928-P.. darn that expensive rascal) Just wondering..
I just started collecting morgans. I purchased 16 of them in 5 days. Be careful, they will get you hooked.
The Morgans in grade are just the most beautiful coins to hold in your hand. It's just the raw quality of the silver and the wide fields makes them beautiful. Ruben
I find them beautiful, it was the first type I started collecting. It would take a long time to finish it.
If you don't want it to such a major project, just do them by date. If you want to expand into all the mintmarks later you can.
One suggestion that someone made months ago was to begin a "one coin coin collection." This obviously isn't for everyone, and only a tiny fraction of collectors might enjoy it without getting bored. I thought it was a pretty creative idea that doesn't involve the potential agony over not being able to finish a collection by date. I think someone suggested 1878 morgans as a candidate for the one coin collection because there is enough variety in mintmarks, variations, and grades to make an interesting group of coins. I haven't done anything like this, but I'm tempted.
Even in VG grades, how can you not like the look of this coin? Another reason? They are big. They have substance. They offer a lot to look at even if your eyes are not as good when you were a teenager.
Well I think I may take the dive... at least pick up a set of BU 1921 mints.. from there who knows.. thanks guys
Given the huge number of VAMs and die states of just the 1921's, you could stay on that date alone for quite a while. Further, you could rationalize it as "heck, I'm only collecting one date," while still acquiring a bunch more coins.
What's NOT to like about Morgans? They're the best dollar coin ever minted IMO, With Peace coming in a close second. Morgan did a great job on these coins, the hairlines, the intricacy of the face, everything. BEAUTIFUL. They are full of silver, and they have something you can hold onto and show off. If you want to get one, get a good AU58+ and see how beautiful it is. Hold it up to a fire or candle and watch the light glimmer in the fields, and you'll be hooked. :thumb: :hail: :hail:
Have to agree they are stunning coins everyone should have at least one in there collection LOL De Orc :kewl:
hehehe....I don't really like them but maybe that is because my sisters name is Morgan... No the reason I don't collect them is: There are way too many people out there collecting them....there are not as many collecting BU Dimes I bet from 1946-date..... That is the coin you see most at a coin show...they aren't hard to find...I like coins that take a long time to find.... They are big---take up lots of room.... I would say NGC at the top and then (anyone want to guess) ANACS...I haven't seen many in hand done by ANACS but what I've seen I've liked....PCGS does ok...on the ones I have I think they overgraded by 1 point but that is the case with all of them...so just look at the coin and never look at the lable on the slab. Speedy
I collect 1921-D varieties (VAMS). Check out this website here for more info. Rob Joyce is a great guy. Not many people collect these seriously so interesting and rare finds are out there for cherrypicking. Here are a few from my collection: VAM 1K VAM 1L VAM 1T Have fun...Mike
For me its about patience and timing. If you are willing to pursue a large and difficult collection such as the morgan dollar series it can be a rewarding and fun series to attempt. From my point of view, morgans are a nice challenging set that I have been slowly putting together for the past 3 years. Dont let that deture you though. I'm about 50% complete in a colection in with an average grade of VF-25. The bottom line is collect what you are passionate for and pursue that until you are complete or as close as you can come to completion. My advice, along with most morgan collectors out there, find the tougher dates first and work your way up. Keys are 1889-CC, 1893-O, 1893-S, 1894, 1895-O, 1895-S, 1899, 1903-O, not to mention the 1895 PROOF. Have fun and collect to your hearts content.
I have been collecting Morgans since I was in the 9th grade mowing lawns to get the money to buy them. In my opinion, they are the most beautiful dollar series minted. I only collect uncirculated specimens. I only use NGC to grade and for VAM attribution. I feel they are the most consistent in their grading. I only purchase NGC or PCGS graded coins. PCGS is my second choice. They just recently would attribute a VAM variety. I wish you well in your journey collecting! For me, collecting Morgans has been very rewarding and akin to treasure hunting.
Some dealers you can get(starter collection) around 40 to 44 Morans in 60 to 63 grade for around $1,200.00.thats a good start, or you can just collect all the CC's!, or just one like the 1893-S!! or just toned ones, the list goes on, Good luck and happy collecting!
