So far I've found only a little bit about these cute pieces (which are actually more a light chocolate color than the images show). I wonder how they could have possibly lasted any length of time in commerce. Any notion of the value of such a set in unc?

they are from the Meissen porcelain factory (note the crossed swords),they are fired natural porcelain,it was considered worth as much as gold because how valuable porcelain was. Meissen Porcelain is the most famous from Europe. The coin are probably from the tourist shop, but I dont know that for sure.

I have seen similar sets from various places around Germany. I have seen sets in original boxes sell from $75-$300 depending on where they are from. I haven't seen these particular coins before tho.

Yes, Meissen did make quite a few porcelain notgeld pieces. They circulated to a very limited extent only because they were not excatly durable. Most people found them interesting as collector items and kept them. The ones that Meissen issued for the state of Saxony, for example, are not really expensive: Mintages of the 1921 issues without the golden border were roughly half a million each, and these cost less than €10. Local issues may well be more expensive.

Side note: This year the Federal Republic issued a collector coin that celebrates 300 years of porcelain production in (what today is) Germany. And what does it show? A broken plate. :)
