Steve, that's a very nice 'Totem Pole Dollar' you have got there.I have yet to get one of those. You do realise that this coin is unpopular with the Native Canadians of British Columbia,as it contains the symbol of a raven, which,to them represents death. The raven is located near the top of the totem pole.

    Aidan.

Wandering through I came across this. Alas, it's incorrect. the raven is the trickster. He's the one responsible for the earth's existence and that of humankind.

The reason the coin is disliked is that the native people feel their symbology has been co-opted. It would be like the US deciding they would mint coins using Oregon's State seal to mark the anniversity of California's statehood because it looked nicer on a coin. (And makes about as much sense.)

Thank you for that bit of infomation it was quite enlightening, I knew that the Raven was the trickster along with the Mink & Coyote :smile but I had not realised the Indians thought there symbology had been co opted  Oh and of course Welcome to the forum LOL

    Thank you.
one other thing of interest. There were no treaties signed with native populations in B.C. It's only very recently that two (I think) groups have started negotiating land rights. The B.C. government, evidently, figured if they ignored them they'd go away. Right. I guess a good claim could be made that the various native populations still own B.C.

OK Vancouver, we want our lands back so find a place to move to - 90 days! :) :) :)
