    Did you know that in 1616 the first coins issued in the New World were issued on the Sommer Islands (Bermuda). The coins were known as Hogge Money. The denominations issued were shilling, sixpence, threepence, twopence, each indicated with Roman numerals. To read more, take a look at this link:

    Heck, I always thought that the mint at Mexico City was the first issuer of coins in the new world (western hemisphere), the Mexico City Mint was established around 1535.

    Hogge Money was the 1st coins specifically struck for the English American colonies. The Spanish Reale was eventually adopted by the colonies. The 1st coins struck by our colonies were struck between June 11 & Oct. 19, 1652...
