The obverse is saying MS and the reverse is saying AU to me. So I will say MS62. I can't tell on the reverse if it is a weak strike, flat or just wear. No matter what - a nice coin.

nah, the usual bad strike for the No Cents reverse.

    MS-63.

  6. I am thinking MS63/64. Nice coin. TC

Agreed - but it looks like no luster on it, which could of course just be the pictures.

I'll put in a vote of ms 64.

I would say the pictures dampen the luster on the coin. If you look, you can see the typical weakness and mushy stars 1 and 2 that I see on most 1883s. Those correspond with the reverse weakness in the wreath, imo. There seems to be some slight champagne colored toning on the coin, but I am not sure due to the yellowness of the pics. Otherwise I am going to call this a typical strike for the coin and imo about an MS-63. (I think in order to get higher stars 1 and 2 should be fully struck.)

65 all day long and an above average strike for the issue (I'd say 85% percentile at least).

I know isnt that odd (*or not for the coin??) the star is like flat almost but everyother star is fine (sharp)

I would say!!! if only the rev. was cleaner and the first (mabye half of the second) star was struck well no dobt 65 but like the holder anyway

Meh, PCGS/NGC don't hold these coins back in 64,65,66 grades for strike, IMO. Look at Heritage if you don't believe me. Practically all of them are weakly struck.

    FWIW, here's my NGC 65:

    Here's my PCGS 63 (OGH):

I chose both these coins primarily for strength of strike....Mike

p.s. looking at your coin again, I wonder if the slight discoloration on cheek held it back.....

you know in hand the toning is minor at best...there is most on the observe than back but you need to tilt it at an angle and then its a pale yellow ..as for the cheek, to be honest (again) considering the nicks on and around the "V" its in my opinion a nice MS-64 (tho I would appreciate the price jump :D) anyway I understand the pics arent the best ,,esp. when using a semi old camera and using a 10X loope for zoom and clarity :p

I'm late to the party. Would've guessed 65 before scrolling down to see the slab. The obv. is mighty clean but I can see how the rev. marks could limit the grade. Agree with Leadfoot: average or better strike; it would not compromise the grade.
