Hi, all. Just came back yesturday from a 5 day trip in Brampton, Ontario(family.) My great aunt gave me this note and I being a coin collector (an American coin collector at that) I have no clue about this note. I was able to get that the treasury in Canada doesnt print these anyway. Comments, values and info appreciated as always:headphones:

Good to see the old Canadian $1 show up in collections. You’re on the right track when you say that the treasury in Canada does not print these. The last paper $1 was the 1973 series – the one you have. Since 1987, Canada has minted Canadian dollar coins, nicknamed “loonies” because there is an image of a loon on the coin. (The two dollar coin is nicknamed a “toonie” because there’s an image of a polar bear on it – go figure!)
Back to your note: the series was printed for the Bank of Canada, by both the Canadian Banknote Company (CBN) and the British American Banknote Company (BABN). Notes with the “BAX” suffix like yours were printed by BABN. The front is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the back is a view of our Parliament Buildings.

Both CBN and BABN have interesting histories of their own. Loads of added info is only a Google search away, but my favourite fact about BABN is that it was owned briefly (1984-1988) by Canada’s largest telephone company. Those were the days when Bell Canada (and its parent company BCE) was trying to discover what it wanted to be in the new deregulated world. Much like AT&T, they experimented with buying and selling several businesses. I always thought the image of one of our county’s last great monopolies actually having the right to print money was ironic.

Someone else can help you with the value of the note, but my guess is that the story behind the note is likely worth more than the note itself – although it will be a nice family memento, I’m sure.

Maybe we could get AT&T to buy the American Bank Note Company!

I figured a toonie stood for two-onie and had nothing to do with the bear.
Just think - the queen on front with a bear behind - sounds risque.

You're right...it's a TWOonie... guess my lame attempt at humour missed the mark . I like yours better. There is random chatter in Canada about replacing the $5 with a coin at some point in the future. Pretty sure we won't do it until we come up with a cool nickname for a five dollar coin, though ;).
Back when the twoonie was introduced and the CAN/US exchange rate was more in favour of the US, there was a joke that the Can $2 coin would be called a US dollar. Those days are gone, and the currencies trade within 5% of par value these days.

Found this thread in search, got a question about 2 consecutive notes. Both $1, both look exactly like the one in first post, but 100% crisp. Number is BAK502****

What should be the value for 2 crisp consecutive $1 from 1973? Thanks.

that note looks almost crisp. i was hoping that the brown mark under canada was on the plastic not the paper but i think its on paper.

the toonie, when first introduced was on the news with suggested nicknames, since we had one for the dollar coin, i guess we just had to have one for the 2 dollar coin. bear back is the only one i can really remember.
now....sugestions for the 5? you know we need one cause someone made us cheesy by making up the loonie nickname in the first place.
fivey? quint? blueback?(since the bills are blue) . if we keep it up the rest of the world will start to think we dont use "dollar" as currency in canada.

    Fake Loonie

Here are some pics of one of the 1990 fake loonies I've had. The other one I sold to a guy for five bucks shortly after finding it in my change, that was back when these were circulating around '92 or '93.

I have two that I suspect are either fake or were made as jewelry. They both have a different color to them than the regular loonies.

wait so are these "loonies" as you call them...the 1dollar coins worth more than say 1$?

The Canadian $1 coin is called a loonie (because of the loon on the reverse). The $2 coin it called a twoonie because it has a bear on the reverse.:D
