Coin dealer gave me a funny look when I asked if he had face value junk silver I could buy. He said I was the first person so ever ask if he did $1 or more face in silver for whatever the going rate of silver is.

I colect MS & PF coins ,ones I want to keep, but to me junk coins and I do have some,
are ones that I can bury in a coffee can in the back yard so they wont be stolen .
Rim dings, circulated ,cleaned ,fingerprinted,AU rolls that were sold as MS .I even have some Franklin halfs that were shot with a bb gun but sold on ebay as GEM BU

"Junk coins" -- my two cent piece:

Junk coins are simply common coins in common grades, worth either face value or bullion value depending on the coin (it should be obvious which). Luke1988 explains this well for silver coins; indeed, virtually any circulated Franklin half would be considered "junk" today.

For world coins -- the kind of coin commonly found in dealers' "Junk" boxes at prices like 4 for a dollar, or the kind of coins that you can buy by the pound.

Importantly -- junk coins *are* collectible, although of very low value. They're great for YNs and collectors on a budget. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Most damaged coins don't even rise to the level of junk, IMO.
