Who collects liberty head (v) nickels?

I was just curious, as I don't think i've seen more than 10 posts concerning v nickels. Personally, I think they're a great collection to have because you can
find top conditions for low ( hehe) prices.

It's actually a collection my dad started and I'm in the process of finishing.

I haven't really started collecting them yet, but considering all the different types of coins to collect I think they are the neatest ones. I'd like to start collecting as soon as I can.

They are truly a neat and undervalued series, IMHO.

I collect them only for type.

 

I collect them and it is true there is little interest in them at coin shows. Possibly due to short duration minted, high quantities and many with extreame wear. The Whitman Album of mine has the slot for the 1913 which means it is impossible to ever complete. That alone makes it my least favorite collection. Whitman has a bad habit of including coins that should not be in the albums.

 

Yeah, that annoys me too. It's also like that in the IHC folder with the 1856 FE.

I know a guy that got on ebay and got what the seller said was a 1912....it had a S.....I've been watching off and on for one with good photos but from a non-collector that missed the S...so far I've bought about 3 and they have all been D's.

Speedy - Good plan! I'll bet you eventually get one.

 

Well I just go and search for 1912 and I won't look at any that say P or This Coin Grades XXX....I think if someone puts a grade they more than likely know enough to look for a S....or says I'm not a good collector....or the kind....I will only bid on them if they have a photo of the back....I've seen a good many that might have been an S but the front doesn't show anything and I sure don't have the money to buy all of the P's and D's out there!!!

Wow, leadfoot that is a beautiful 1883 wo. I like to collect higher au's or lower ms's, the prices are killers once you get up high (lot of lawns to pay for an ms 65). Just Carl, btw, whitman took the 1913 slot off the newer folders.

 

For most dates that is right but for the 1883 NO CENTS a AU/UNC is pretty cheap....

One of the dealers around here always has 1883 wo in au, so I get one every time the price is right. I think I have about 15 of them. :thumb: :kewl:

 

I Have a complete set of Liberty "V" Nickels with the exception of the 1885. Mostly G-VG coins with a few VF-EF in the mix. It was a fun and cheap set "for the most part" to assemble and to add to my "Barber" coin sets.

FWIW, the 1912-S is ANACS F 12 and cost me $210. The 1883 N/C is NGC MS 65 and cost me $201 -- it is particularly well struck and one of my favorite coins.

Here's my other one:



It was raw and cost me $10.

The 1883 was the first year of the type, and was saved in great numbers, thus the low price even today. They are not hard to find, but they are hard to find well struck.
