Took my peace dollars out of the safe today to take stock. To my shock, my unc 1921 was nowhere to be found. I recall leaving it around the apartment a bit more than I should have. I suspect my (now former) cleaning lady or a maintenance guy must have stolen it. Ugh!

Try posting flyers around the complex asking for it's return with a $25 reward with NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

Just say that it was lost, and it has sentimental value. Don't accuse anyone of theft, and don't mention how much it is worth.

I managed to lose a GSA Carson City silver dollar sometime in the 1980's.

I still have the box and certificate (signed by Richard Nixon!) but not the coin or the plastic holder.

    :)

Is that like advertising to other prospective thieves who may be alerted by the flier that you may have other coins?

That is why I said that the flyer should state that the coin has sentimental value. He can say that it was a gift from his grandmother or grandfather. He should also just say that it is a silver dollar and give only the date. Don't mention that it is a Peace Dollar or anything. That might suggest that he knows about coins. He shouldn't even list his address, just his cell phone. If anyone calls about it, arrange to meet somewhere other than his apartment. Obviously, it won't matter to the thief because he/she already knows where he lives.

Regardless, posting a flier with any mention of these things is taking a serious risk for personal and home security. The mention of 'silver' ["a silver dollar"] alone could be enough reason for some dim wit desperate crook to do a reverse phone number look up to track your address and come snooping around.

This one's a hard lesson the OP has to face on collection handling and security. Very sorry for his loss, but it's hard to trust others and money, if indeed someone else relieved him of his possession. I'm also not sure of the timing of these events but it sounds long gone and any attempt to get it back now is fruitless, except for pointing out a collection in the vicinity of the area the fliers are intended to be posted.

I'd advise to fore go the fliers entirely.

BTW: I'm not criticizing your idea Chris as much as giving counter-point for the OP to consider. :thumb:

It's almost impossible to reverse look up a cell phone number without working for the company that maintains the account or being a LEO, so the risk there is minimal.

No offense taken, Krispy. It's good to consider all of the good points and bad points. Another possibility is to contact coin shops and pawn shops in the area. It would also be a good idea to file a police report since most pawn shops are heavily scrutinized and regulated when it comes to stolen merchandise.

'Almost' isn't an absolute. So I wouldn't put it past a smart or idiotic crook.

As I said, unless the information has bee put out there somewhere else, you're not gonna find it. It just doesn't work like that... cell phone companies really understand the importance of security for their customers and will never give that info out for anything short of a subpoena. Take it from someone who has worked in the wireless industry the last 4 years. I know my ****.

If you're really worried about it, run to Wal-Mart or Best Buy, activate a prepaid phone, use that number under a fake address, and just return it before the 30 days is up... You'll still have to pay for the minutes, but not the cost of the phone in that case. Or just keep it. I'd probably go with Virgin Mobile since they have the lowest per minute cost and you won't be using it much. Runs on Sprints network, so coverage is solid too.

I'm not trying to be argumentative at all, I understand there's lesser degree of risk in posting a cell number, but it is not beyond the grasp of anyone to acquire another person's cell number, as you said, "unless the information has bee put out there somewhere else" and that gets to my point, some folks don't even realize that they can be tracked online, very easily or for a small fee, by information they never realized was compiled by third parties about them and traceable online.

Remember that white fedora-wearing James Bond dude we gave the run around a while ago... it doesn't take much to shake enough clues out the digital tree of information.

Ouch! Sucks when that happens. I have lost coins before but all I have is kids who go in my office every once in a while...LOL

  19. I am confused. You have your Peace dollars in a safe but leave the 21 around the apartment? Maybe you just misplaced it. Check your trash, under seat cushions, etc. Hope you find it. TC

if you really want to put out a cell number but not have it come back to an address at all, sign up for a google voice number, route it to your phone, and wait for the call. you can even record the convo in case you need it for the leo's at a later time.

its free, and i don't think you have to be invited anymore. but if you do, i got some invites, just pm me.

I realize this whole thing sounds a bit strange. I really sympathize with the notion that I shouldn't have a cleaning lady. Problem is a the missus and I both have pretty demanding jobs, without which I wouldn't be able to buy such nice coins. That same demanding job means that I'm sometimes a space cadet when it comes to putting away valued items when I'm viewing. Well, I'll never make that mistake again.

I think I'm going to call the cops tomorrow to make a report. Hopefully it turns up at a local pawn shop.
