I bought some Mint and proof sets from 1960-1964 and wanted to know if i put the coins in 2x2s if it would affect the value any?
well luke the best thing to do is keep them in there original package.. but what you could do is send them to be graded by ngc as a whole item
Luke: Welcome to CT! I would keep them in OGP. There are lots of varieties in those years so be sure to check for them. For example, in the mint sets check for Type B Washington quarters as they carry a decent premium. TC
So even if one nice coin is worth twice as much as the entire set i should keep it in? Were do you draw the line?
I keep mine in the OGP. I've only opened one but that one was clad so it was one I wanted to get rid of anyways! All my silver stays original!!
If you are keeping them, I think you should leave them intact. If you are re selling them, I think you would generate a higher return by breaking the sets up. IMHO
If you take the coins out of the original government packaging your going to take about a 25% hit when you go to sell them.
Considering that you can buy these sets for less than $20 each, I would go with bq's comment of "do whatever makes you happy". Having said that, I can never bring myself to opening a mint or proof set. I must have issues.
Sounds like this choice is what makes you happy. I say play with some~preserve the others in issue state. After all, what you learn from letting Pandora out of her box may be of use in deciding if you want to the others.
Well, I got 50c less for a well circulated Franklin I sold on eBay as I did the complete 62 proof set that had the additional 41c face of coins. If I ever auction another set, I am cutting it up in a heartbeat ! The sale of the 5c alone would likely be higher than the complete set would get. Just how it happened when I did it.
I would keep one set original from the mint and if i had any duplicate sets I would crack,em open and 2x2 um.
ogp issue listen folks ill put it to you this way i'd prefer to have the coins in the ogp than 2x2s if you send the ogp to ngc the will host slab it with an individual grade.. i only have one complete slab set.. it cost 24 dollars to have it graded/.. my 1955 its great..
I'd break them up if they have higher graded coins. I've found most sets that are still intact are pretty junky and have already been cherry picked for higher grades and accented hair.
