I have heard that the best book to buy with regards to National Currency is the 6th edition book by Don C. Kelly "National Bank Notes". I am really only looking for information regarding one small local bank and was wondering if anyone already had this book. I can't see spending $90 on a book I might only use once. If don't know the exact information available in the book but I am looking for anything they have regarding bank number 8798- First National Trust and Savings, Chico California. Thanks for your time. Brian
I don't have that publication to speak to your inquiry and I also do not yet know a whole lot about Nationals. However, I found this to be a VERY useful site, which also allows you to search by state, check it out: RareNationalCurrency.com I would be interested in any source of information related to bank charter numbers. I have been searching for a comprehensive list. Does the Kelly book or another online source contain a list of all National Bank Notes paired with charter numbers, bank names and states? Seems that would be a very helpful list to have for the comprehensive collectors out there.
With regards to the 1929 bills- I have collected 11 of the 12 Federal Reserve banks so far, just looking for a St Louis for a decent price. Or a $5 San Francisco, but that is another story. Also looking for large size bills from SF. I have so many directions I am going.....
I think the Kelly book also comes with a CD that contains numbers of known bills. Not 100% sure on that though.
I have been traveling all week and pretty tired.. I have Kelly's 5th and will take a look tomorrow if no one else replies first.. Night all... RickieB
Yes, but I do actually collect both. I helped derail my own thread. to clarify- 1) The main bill I am looking for info on is one of the 1929 chartered bank notes, in many cases much harder to find then the Federal Reserve notes. 2) I am also collecting one bill from each of the 12 "Federal Reserve" banks (missing St Louis) 3) I am also collecting any other notes from San Francisco (Federal Reserve or National Currency, Large or Small)
Additional Information There were two titles for the bank. Track & Price lists 8 Large Size reported for the first title, First National Bank of Chico. They list 2 Large and 24 Small under the second title, First National Trust & Savings Bank of Chico. The bank was organized on July 8, 1907. It assumed the second title on June 11, 1928 and went into receivership on July 18, 1933. I hope that helps.
thanks for the info, is the $300 for a specific denomination or are they all about the same? I saw somewhere that most of the bills produced (about 74%) were $10. The bill I am looking at buying is a $20 (26% of bills) would that change the value? Does the Kelly book split the info down to that level?
I have a Kelly book and if you need something looked up I will do it for you if you need. And yes it lists the denomination and the type such as large versus small versus TY1 versus TY2. It also gives a population for them that is "known".
Yes it goes by state then you can look alphabetically at the city's names but in big city's I look for the charter number as they are big and bold and it's easier when searching in say NY, NY. They give only the price for a VF note then you do a mulitiple for each grade above that condition. It's explained in the beginning of the book.
Thanks Duke. I am interested in learning about Nationals more but Don Kelly's book is pretty pricey. I am glad to know that the information I would find useful is in there since I can't find a comprehensive list online of all the banks and their charter numbers. I guess I'll have to save up and buy his book/CD set someday even though I don't see myself branching out into Nationals as a collector. I do enjoy reading and knowing about things even though I don't necessarily build a collection around them, though I too will shoot for at least one St Louis note to be featured in my District Set one day. :smile
Duke, can you tell me prices for the 1929 (small) notes for bank 8798-Chico California. I am interested in prices for both the $10 and the $20, also the known population for each if it is listed. Thanks.
Krispy-I still can't send you a PM (even as a reply) I have a possible way for each of us to get the St Louis bills we need.
They both show $300 and that would be in VF. The pop shows 20 in the small size. Sorry for not noticing the post but CT isn't sending me the emails of when there is a reply like it used to. So I dont know when someone reply's. Hope this helps.
Thanks, I guess I will be looking a little longer. Only ones I have found so far are almost twice that price.
