I was just watching my favorite sitcom on television (that being The CoinVault) and they had the 50 state quarter collection on there. They were graded by NGC and you had your choice: 50 State Quarters NGC PF69 $999.95 or 50 State Quarters NGC PF70 $7999.95!!!!
Come on!!!! 99 out of 100 people could not tell the difference between PF69 or PF70 and that kind of a premium on a modern coin is ridiculous.
My real question is this; does this kind of desparity really exist between these two grades in modern coins in the real world, such as real auction houses, dealers etc.
I understand that this difference in grade can make quite a difference in older coins and rare dates, but on coins made in the last 10 years I cannot fathom that this would be possible. I guess I am just confussed, I said a lot but did not really say much!!!

P.S. I am not really sure that desparity is the word I am looking for there!!!!!

You are thinking 'disparity'. Parity is when different items are equivalent or equal. Disparity is when there is a (usually large) difference (as in price).

When it comes to slabbed gold and silver bullion, I do not see any difference between the 69 and 70 grade. I guess I would not be able to see a difference since I do not know how to grade coins or bullion.

It is stupid, as the sheldon scale was originally was saying that, say a G4 coin is worth 2x as much as an FR-2 coin. it was on value, so I think it is outrageous that the MS70 should be so high compared to MS69

I don't buy it. I get good looking 69's but not a 70 at these prices.

I think there is a big price difference between a proof 69 and 70 in most cases. I wouldn't pay it though. If you can't see the difference why pay it. I think it all comes down to numbers, far less 70's slabbed than 69.

If they want to impress me, set up a MS 70 state quarter collection!

While I don't agree with the ridiculous prices people are asking for 70's, you can't use the original intent and application of the Sheldon Scale as a justification for objecting to these prices. Times change! At that time, 103 octane gas was only 25c a gallon.
