I'm temporarily relocated to the DC area, but thus far have turned up bust in trying to find a local coin store. Does anyone know of any good ones? Please include the suburbs, especially on the Virginia side of the river (I'm staying in Alexandria).

Julian Leidman is in Silver Spring, MD. Wayne Herndon is in Oakton, VA but I don't know if Wayne has a store.

PS. Be sure to visit the United States Collection at the Smithsonian while you're there.

Also Andy Skrabalak (Angel Dee's) in Woodbridge, VA.
No store but has a website (www.angeldees.com).
His strength is better grade small cents.

And if you have the time and inclination there's a middle-sized show (30-40 dealers) in Hagerstown, MD, Sept 4-5.

I checked with a friend on the NGC forums who lives in Rockville, MD, and here are his suggestions:

    Julian Leidman
    940 Wayne Ave.
    Silver Spring, MD
    301-585-8467

You should really try to visit Julian's store. It is definitely worth the trip, and he's right off of the Beltway (I-495).

    Gaithersburg Coin Exchange
    16 East Diamond Ave.
    Gaithersburg, MD
    301-948-6884

According to Scott, GCE always has a good inventory. Take I-495 west into MD and then I-280 northwest past Rockville exits to Gaithersburg.

    Cameo Coins & Collectibles
    444 Maple Ave. East
    Vienna, VA
    703-281-7053

Scott said that there are mixed reviews on CC&C, but he has always been treated well by them.

According to Scott, there are other dealers in the Metro area, but most of them cater to mail order business.

    Shouldn't that be I-270?

    Another place I would recommend:
    Coins of the Realm
    1331-F Rockville Pike
    Rockville, MD
    301-340-1640
The downside of this place is that it's in a traffic congested area.

I live in MD so I'm not much help with the VA side of the river.

Yeah, it should be I-270. I didn't proofread it before I posted. Let's face it, there isn't anywhere in the DC Metro area that doesn't have traffic congestion.

1331 Rockville Pike? Where is that in relation to (I'm dating myself) the old Congressional Plaza? There's a pretty nice poolroom there.

    No, it's north of that.
    Up by Woodmont Country Club.

And even by DC standards it's congested.

Woodmont Country Club.....boy, that brings back memories. I played a round of golf there once in 1964. I was at the poolroom just up the road (Montgomery Av, Wisconsin Av, Rt. 355.....take your pick), and some of my friends were going to play since it was caddie's day. They asked if I wanted to join them, so I did. I shot 116 for 18 holes. I stuck with pool!

Frederick MD might be a bit too far north, but if your in the area try:

    Frederick Coin Exchange:
    25 North Market Street
    Frederick, MD 21701
    (301) 898-2863

I used to frequent Cameo. He gets very high marks from me. Highly recommended.
