I just came across some real junk Canadian silver. A few are .500 and a few are .925, but most are .800. However, when I say junk, I really mean it. As a numismatist, I totally agree that if you are considering melting silver coins don't, keep them because they have a guaranteed fineness. Never melt a coin. But these.....melt 'em. I keep a box of duplicate silver and I'd be afraid to put some of these in there. I think they were in a flood or something. Gross. Some are green covered, some look like they have a copper colored rust on them. Mostly quarters. Is there a set "value" for Canadian like there is for US silver?
I'd separate them by content. The .925 stuff is worth about 90% of melt to a dealer because it has to be processed... but is fairly inexpensive to do so because it is high content sterling silver. The .800 and the .500 is worth %75-%80 of melt to a dealer... it's a little more expensive to process.
Like Dutch said, separate them by content. Then offer them as small lots on eBay. There are silver buyers who take just about anything at better than dealer buy prices. IMHO
www.coinflation.com has Canadian melt values I believe. I agree with 10Gary, though, that you will probably get a better price on Ebay.
I agree... the EBay method of selling them should net a little more but I'm not sure if it's going to be enough to cover the 12% in fees your gonna get... might be a wash...
