How do you think PCGS would grade this coin? Do you think it would it come back as "Genuine (Ungradeable)". Thanks for any opinions!!
Hey thanks for this info!! Just curious ... what are the worst damage points that makes it genuine? (what's the worst thing about this coin) Also what are the details? AG? Thanks again for all your help!
thank you ... this is really helpful info ! by the way ... this was an ebay coin ... i thought about bidding on it because it was relatively cheap ... but decided against it ... It was advertised as ... 1794 S41 Liberty cap large cent VERY GOOD 1C No Reserve It ended up selling for $164 Still I wanted to learn more about spotting this type of damage that causes coins to be ungradeable ... for potential future purchases Again thanks for your time!
That's the way to play it ! There are many helpful folks on this website. This was Shawn Yancey's coin - a very, very high quality man. Totally reputable. $164 is a decent price for this coin. I agree with his assessment of VG details. With the obverse damage, it probably nets 3; CQR prices such a coin at $150-200.
What do you make of the fact that the reverse has readable legends, except the ONE CENT is almost completely gone ?
yes ... i agree ... the wear pattern is very strange (the price was cheap which is what attracted me initially )
Hint : Look on the reverse, between the AT in STATES. You will see a radial line (pointing toward the center of the coin). Look at the D in UNITED, and you will see a horizontal line, also pointing toward the center of the coin. What are those, and what possible connection could they have with the missing ONE CENT legend ?
Yes, you betcha ! Same with the "D". On better-preserved specimens, one sees those die cracks reaching near the center; combined, they look like a slice of pizza. Clearly, this is a well-worn die. It's mechanical / structural problems prevent it from delivering a full strike. By the time this coin was struck, it wasn't just cracked - it was warped. The fields weren't flat anymore (so-called "die bulging"). The warp / bulge affected the ONE CENT region. This coin had a very weak ONE CENT when it was born, and it quickly wore away entirely.
