heritage auctions appraiser denies this is even an error coin at all. clearly shows that the 5 is over a d mintmark and the mintmark is repunched. what do you think?
Please realize the difficulty confirming or denying an error from photos. I do not think the 5 is over any letter. It appears more as from a deteriorated die producing that extra metal. As far as a D/D mintmark, there are a couple listed that appear close to the photo, but not exactly the same angle. I suspect from the machine doubling on the "1" and "9" on the date that the appearance of the mintmark has been affected also, so I am not sure from this photo if it is or is not. IMO. Jim
I seriously doubt that, for several reasons. 1 - the variety you are talking about in the Cheerypicker's Guide has that supposed D under the curve of the 5 - not the top of it. 2 - it would be impossible for a D to be there because the mint marks were not added to the dies until after the die was hubbed. So if the D was there it would have to be on top of the 5 not under it. 3 - even the Cherrypicker's Guide says their listed variety "may be proved to be a die chip".
Yeah there is, probably a die chip or die erosion. As for this one - it's just a novelty struck on a genuine coin after it left the the US Mint. They used to make those by the thousands.
If the mint mark was added last to a die (a concave mirror image of the coin) how could it possibly appear over a numeral? That said, I agree, the area in question is a die chip
