First off, both of these dollars have been cleaned with a silver dip -- they are roughly in the same condition with a nice strike and very little wear. Question: why is the dollar on the left so dull looking when the Peace on the right is literally shimmering with luster? Would the dull dollar even grade?
It is hard to tell. However, I think the one on the left has been circulated. I see some wear in the hair and the base of the neck. Peace Dollars are tough to grade when you are holding them in your hand. Let alone looking at photographs.
The lack of definition on the 1923 is probably due to a weak strike rather than circulation, and I agree with coleguy that it has been dipped a few too many times. Chris
Regarding the grade - the '23 seems to have a significantly smaller amount of contact marks compared to the '22. Would this indicate that it would grade higher than the '22? Or would the assumption that it's been dipped too many times prevent it from even grading at all?
Firstly, neither of those dollars are worth grading untill you get up into ms66 because they are very common. That being said, TPG's grade heavily on luster, and this series is known for BOOMING luster in better specimens. The one on the left looks lightly circulated, and as other posters have stated, dipped out. The one on the right has some of that nice luster, but some contact marks to go with it. Certainly nice coins, but not good candidates for a grading submission IMHO.
ya, "officially" I would give the 23 a MS-63 w/ a possible dipping but neither is anywhere close to being fit for grading (how many million where minted ? lol )
1st one is dipped almost to the point of lifelessness, but would still grade. Probably would've gotten a 64 if not overdipped, but I would say MS-63 for both.
