At some point, in every collectors carrer, they make a choice in what they would like to specialize in. Being basically a "modern" guy I've discovered a new path...a new direction....a new calling. Classic commemoratives. I've admired these from afar for too long. Some of my Boston pickups....
I'll chase these after I get done my silver dollars. There's some fantastically beautiful coins in those series'.
Yes there are some sites out there, try this one for classics: http://www.coincommunity.com/commemorative_histories/
Not sure about "on line " resources, but didn't Bowers write a book on classic commem's? Gotta get that one.....
A Guide Book of United States Commemorative Coins: History-rarity-values-grading-varieties (The Official Red Book)
Nice coins, the more I see that texas comm, the more I like it, I already have the oregon trail one, (26-s) Just a question, are you looking to collect examples, or year mm sets? Some of those coins were made at all three mints for multiple years. Another question, what was your first commemorative?
Chris, it's late and the feeble mind isn't working. They're all tucked away safe and sound where the dear wife is sleeping and I dare not turn on the light... Tomorrow. I will say this. The Vermont is graded ms-62 and the Long Island is "raw". Chip, at this point I'm just looking to pickup fine examples of these coins. I'm not looking to get all mint marks and series. As to your second question....George Washington (modern) was my first commem. My first "classic" commem was a Stone Mountain, ungraded. Gotta pick up a slabby one o' these days....
Very nice, I saw a couple over at http://www.numissociety.com/ That Oregon Trail is really nice and a 34 to boot! I also really like that Bennington!! Yeah, I like them all you really scored but if I had to choose only one, that Bennington would be the one!!
I too have to admit that I have been admiring comms from afar, after seeing your pick ups I am getting that distinct collecting itch. I really like that Texas one, nice pick ups Greenie.
Ken: Great pick-ups of some really nice classic commemoratives. Glad to see you enjoyed your trip to Boston. Are you no longer a Modern Man? Enjoy! TC
OK, wide awake.....the Texas is a '63 and the Oregon is a '64...... TC, I think I'll always be a "modern guy". I'm just expanding a new horizon.....
Green, those are very nice pick-ups (especially for silver discs )! Commens do have some great designs, that's for sure!!
