Awhile back I purchased an NGC 1939-D MS66 Jefferson Nickel. It is really nice for the grade. Very minimal marks and beautiful toned luster. Upon examining it I recognized that it was indeed the DDO-001 variety. The dead giveaway is the die scratch under the E in LIBERTY. I also purchased a raw Jefferson in around MS65 that has the same variety. My questions are: What are the values for the NGC in MS66 and also the value for the raw MS65? Thanks, Robert
Hi Robert, I replied to this message when you asked in CU but will reply again here. The coin is not scarce but has a nice spread. Being that it is a key date for the series drives the price up considerably. Fair 65 value is probably around $50... If the NGC coin is "listable" in the registry with that attribution then it may be worth considerably more just for that reason. ***EDITED to say that I located a 66 example (which I did not buy) with a list price of $250.
Thanks Jason! I know that I asked the question in CU but I think that I failed to mention there that the coin is slabbed. Upon looking on Chuck D'Ambra's website, I found that he had an ICG MS67 1939-D DDO-001 listed for $185. I looked again last night and it was already sold. NGC doesn't recognize the variety but who knows, with variety collecting gaining popularity and increased competitiveness amongst grading services, it may well become a variety that they recognize. Thanks again! This site rocks ass!
I also forgot to mention that I cherrypicked this variety on Northeast's website. I thoght that their price was kind of high $100 but when I saw that it was a DDO, I changed my mind. I have since bought a raw one that is around MS65 and has a gorgeous reverse sunset tone.
