So I went to a different coin shop today(need to go back to search the bargain bins better) and saw 3 MPCs sitting in the display case. A series 521 5 and 10 cent note, and a series 641 5 cent. The prices were great, so I figured why not? I think they look great. How did I do?
These notes are very common in good shape yours are a bit on the rough side What did you pay for them??
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you paid too much. All of these notes catalog at $1-2.00 each in this grade (VG). The 641 nickel only catalogs at $12.00 in UNC. THe 521's catalog between $30-40.00 each in UNC. If you did not want to spend that much, you should be able to find this group in nice EF condition for about $30.00.
That's a bit high for that condition. The 5 and 10 centers are very cheap. And even most of the 25 and 50 cents are not too much. I'm not picking on you as I did the same when I started and just wanted to fill up my set but very quickly I decided that why collect the worn out/paperclip stained ones when the CU ones are just a bit more. Now the $5's and above are a different story but not the small change ones. So in summary it's great to start a new set but think about the grade when your doing it as it's not a race.
Hey it's still a start. U just paid a bit too much I think we all have done that now haven't we...eheheh Now get back to the bright side, you've got a start to your MPC set!!
Hey Slamster dont worry about it, It happens to everybody, If your still looking for some Reasonably priced Mpc look me up
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I believe you did just fine. Everyone doesn't need to have a "trophy wife" to be in love. Speaking of trophy women, that beauty pictured on the Series 641, 5-cent note, can RON [remain over night] in my bunker anytime. In fact, I would pop a couple of flash-bangs to scare her into jumping in with me. Then I would have to do the manly thing and protect her body with mine. After that, she could reward me with all the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder therapy I deserved. But I foolishly digress . . . . . . . . . While your newly acquired notes may not the best examples available, they are desirable and you are fortunate to own them. Military collectors kill for items that show character resulting from "fair wear and tear" and not from abuse. Because your notes show evidence of use, and that they probably circulated in a wartime environment, they possess historical value. Considering the amount you paid and comparing that to what I have seen guys pay for a recovered CW lead bullet or a broken arrowhead, I say your money was well spent. Judge your purchase by asking yourself . . . what would your rather have, the $13.00 in your pocket or your MPC notes? If the answer is the MPCs, then you did good.
Only if it is ALL of your liquid assets MPC, then I think you reach the point of paying too much no matter how much you may want it. I was actually thinking the other day when people were responding about how I wasn't really phased by the cost for these, because they do show that they were used by someone, and thinking about when or where was kind of cool to me. I like them. I'm all about increasing all of my collections these days.

I picked up a series 521 5 cent MPC while on vacation in Cody, WY, xf condition and I paid $10. You got two more nice pieces and had to pay only $3 more. Happy as a lark. Did not have to pay for shipping, insurance etc. Oh, others did not address those issues. I live in Iowa and I can't go down to my local currency shop and select from a huge inventory. The multi-line dealers in Iowa can be counted pretty much on one hand.
