date set for my son

Some of you will poo poo this, but I'm doing it for the sentimentality. My oldest son was born in 2006 and I'm putting together an NGC certified year set for him. That's one of each business strike coin minted that year, both mint marks. I'm buying them in MS condition, not pulling them from circulation, and then sending them to NGC for certification / slabbing.

It will be 20 coins when I'm done (cent, nickel, dime, five statehood quarters, half, Sac dollar X two for both mint marks). Twenty coins X $12.50 each (cost to certifiy and slab moderns) = $250.00.

I fully understand these coins aren't worth anywhere close to that; in fact, I think all totalled they're worth $2.91 if my math is correct. However, like I said from the outset, I'm doing this for sentimentality. Even if he doesn't take up coin collecting he'll have something to remember me by when I'm gone, and it will be more personal to him.

If it is sentimental to you, and to your son, then they will be worth the 250 bucks. P.S. your math is wrong, they are worth $5.82 hehe

Heh. I forgot to double it for both mint marks :)

I think you'll find most collectors won't knock you for doing that as most of us have done the same. Sentimental value is prized above any monetary value by those who do it for the love of it. Post the outcome if you can.

Man, it's YOUR money. Spend it on what make YOU happy. You know by the time you add the postage and return with insurance you will probably spend $300 or so. That's a lot, but then it's not really, since it's something you are doing for your son. I mean a portrait would set you back a few hundred to several thousand. Or 10 trips to a movie. Add dinner at McD's and it's 7 trips. Not even a day at Disneyland. But he will have the coins forever.

    Go for it !

I strongly recommend that you buy then already certified. "They" get them certified for about $7.50 each.

I would agree with rlm.. You can buy them already slabbed for less than $12.00

    That's a cool idea!

If you're spending that much, why not buy him a 2006 Silver Eagle and/or a 2006 Gold Eagle.
Just think what gold and silver might be worth when he's 60!

A 1 oz Silver Eagle would only cost about $20 or so ... (you might be able to find one already certified)

If a 1 oz Gold Eagle is too much ... you can buy him a 1/10th ounce fractional gold eagle for $180 I think.
Those are beautiful coins ... and having some real gold and silver is always in style.

I think it's a great idea, or you could even look for them already slabbed. You could do the ASE or AGE on top of the date set.

Sounds like fun Mac. Sounds like a plan too. No "flak" from this collector......:)

I am not giving him any flack. Just a suggestion. I did it for my grandkids, but I did proofs PCGS 69's (2000 and 2002) . Paid $7 to $15 for most, but the ASE was about $20.

I have to agree with many here, it's a better deal to buy them already slabbed. It would also be better to buy the lower mintage, nicer satins and/or silver proofs. Your son will probably think a lot more of you after you're gone if his father bought the better value coins.

Richard. Not suggesting that you're giving him any "flak". In fact, I thought your advice was "sound" indeed....:)

I agree - get them already slabbed. And do what you like and it will be a good set.

PS - You could also add a set of silver, gold and plantinum coins from 2006 and that will be a complete modern date set. OOOOOOOH - add the commeratives from 2006 also. One of every coin for the mint from 2006. :) I like that idea and spending your money was fun. :)

That's a nice idea. I believe with NGC if you enter the set in the Registry as a 2006 Mint Set when you've completed it you can have them all reslabbed with your own set name. Maybe something like "Grandpa's Gift Set".

Sounds like a great idea. I bought my kids a proof set and a roll of ases when they were born from their years.

Have been working on similar set for my two sons for almost a year. 2002 and 2004 in NGC. Getting the proofs in PF70 and the P & Ds in MS67 or better. Has been fun up till now, but am starting to have some trouble.

45 coins for 2002 and I am only missing P & D Rosie, Proof 1c, P & D Jeff, 3 proof olympics and the MS70 ASE. Ones that I have remaining sell for a pretty penny and I don't think I can afford the Jeffs and the Rosies...or spring for the gold yet.

46 coins for 2004 and I am missing P 50c, P Iowa and P Wisky. P&D Keelboat and Peace, both Edison Commems, and the Proof Lewis and Clark and the MS70 ASE...and the golds.

It has been great putting it together and the boys really enjoy when we get a new coin. Can't wait till they are old and I am sure they won't crack them open to give them to them. Just at the point now where it is getting a little more expensive and I have made all the "easy kills".

Sure it's more money then it's cash value but if that's what you want to get your kid go for it!

As for the pre graded idea that's a way to save some jack but also you can look at NGC's all in one graded multiset holder. If you look around you'll be able to find it for 06 and it'll all be in one.
    Good luck with it!

Started something similar for my daughter. Mine was a silver proof set for every year since she was born. Hoped to get her interested in collecting but it's not working, but when I kick the bucket she will have those silver sets to remember me by or do as she pleases.
