Hi, I'm looking to build a type set of coins and I thought I'd start with the easy stuff, like semi modern proofs, as they are abundant in high grades. There's 2 auctions on ebay for proof quarters that I'm looking at, one is a 1977 S PF68 Ultra Cameo, and the other is a 1972 S Star. The pictures aren't really that close up, but I believe the star may be for slight toning. Is there a real difference in either of these coins, and how much should I be paying for them. I would rather pay under than red book or something, since I have the patience to wait for a good deal. There's a couple more coins as well, a decent price is appreciated. The Ultra Cameo: The star: And a PF 69 RD Ultra Cameo cent:
I don't know enough about these modern coins to advise you, however, I want to respond to your conjecture regarding the star coin. The star designation when applied to proof coins is for "especially strong cameo contrast" and not for any toning.
I really like the reverse of the 72-S, and I know "they're only worth what you'll pay for them", I just don't want to over pay haha. The 77-S and the cent look like pretty standard proofs though, but they seem pretty cheap at $10 a piece. The star is $20. Thanks for that, Catbert. I sent him a message asking if it was toned or just an angle of the light.
This is correct. The star designation in this case is applied because the reverse qualifies as CAMEO but the obverse just misses. It is not because of the minor toning. Plantguy, please read the attached thread below for a more detailed explanation. The OTHER NGC Star Designation
Thanks for the thread, Lehigh. I'll probably pass on the star then, is the ultra cameo a good deal at $10? Or are there better deals out there? Even if you can get a PF 69 for the same price, although I couldn't really tell the difference XD
