Here is an article about them. The domed building (Montecello-Home of Thomas Jefferson) on the reverse of the coin has a set of steps leading up to the building that shows in first strikes (new dies). Because nickel is a very hard metal even with a high combination alloy with copper, it creates very rapid die wear. After a few thousand coins are minted from the new dies the steps are worn off the building. Shown below is the enlarged Full Steps section of the coin. Isn't the best description, but I did find a photo. maybe that will help.
