If the Chinese had an original thought or idea, it'd be the quickest trip across North America.....

I am sorry for your loss, and hope you can take comfort in the fact that all pens die at some point. Some work themselves to death and others sit back and give you comfort for a log time. I too feel your pain. I will not write with any except a gel pen. Although many of those friends have expired over the past few weeks and months, they can be replaced. But they are not red either.
    My Condolences,
    Gary

We don't produce much of anything here any longer. Our great mid west is now a rust belt. Employment has taken a huge hit and consequently, our coin values. IMHO

I believe this brand is commonly carried in office supply stores. I know I have bought them, just cannot remember officemax, office depot or which. Try there to save the postage!

Followup, working with the new pen (that stupid not quite the red I want) and my stapler puked on me. I opened it to see why it was stapling funny and all its guts popped out. I thought I put it back together but found a spring on my desk. I didn't think it needed the spring, apparently the stapler thought otherwise. RIP What a day!

Pens are dear to my heart, being a music calligrapher for close to 30 years. When I heard they stopped production of my favorite pen/nib, I found source in Germany, sent a money order bought their entire stock. Hundreds of nibs and bodies.
Then a few years ago, they stopped making my Electric eraser strips. Like you, I could only find a similar replacement. And I paid huge shipping when I was 'trying out' replacements. I would order $1.50 in erasers and pay $10 shipping, until I found the best one. I am hoping I have a lifetime supply. I think that's my Father's depression era hoarding instinct coming out in me. (at least he hoarded coins)
When you do something the same way for years and years, it's hard to accept change.
    I feel your pain.

As surprising as that may seem, the earliest memory I have of feeling that "collectible feeling" was helping my mom clean up old estates in preparation for probate sales. That was in Pasadena, Ca in the 1970's. Some of those Green & Green homes had been in the family for many decades. My best personal discoveries were 2 tortoise shell pens & they were beautiful. There were also some very collectible vintage Mont Blanc pens I have owned in the past :(

You know, that's what you'd think if you walked into a Walmart, but most things are still made here, just not as many of the same thing. If I can't find it in a B&M, there are several websites that specialize in made in USA - just search that and you'll find a few.
We make it a rule that nothing from China goes in our mouths and we discourage the kids from wanting toys from there, but that's not always possible. Seems like 10% of those toys are dead out of the package and the rest die soon. After we threw out some Thomas Trains (lead paint) and watched a neighbor's pets die from poisoned pet food, we swore off China and looked for US made. The price is a little higher, but usually a better value due to the higher quality and product safety. Another reason we buy American is we felt like we were slapped in the face by US companies taking US jobs offshore and then selling those inferior products to us. Buy American and bring the jobs back.

Well then, I guess a Dead Fred pen holder is not a very good parting gift then, is it?

When I first starting collecting coins a few years ago, I looked for the best pen for writing on 2x2's that wouldn't smear. Finally while traveling through Port Authority Bus Terminal, NYC I found the pen I loved for years Le Pen - Marvy - Japan. Mine just started to die recently and I couldn't even find the exact one on eBay, It just so happens that I ended up traveling to Port Authority again a few days ago on business and missed my next bus, so with time to kill I went upstairs and bought two more of the pens I love. I figure I am good now for about five more years!!! :)
