There's been a death in my numismatic family

One of the things I like most about coin collecting is the organization. I have a spreadsheet with every piece of data on every coin I own (many thousands). I have boxes and boxes of 2X2's all organized by country. I've even been using the exact same red pen to label my 2X2s for over 10 years. I can't even remember it ever having a cap. The thing is all chewed up and nasty, but I have been getting exactly the same color of ink on every 2X2. Guess who died? The pen..... Other red pens aren't quite exactly the same shade. I found the exact brand, Universal Red Medium Point. Only 79c a dozen, but.....$7.95 postage!!! Yikes. Guess my anal-retentive self is going to have to suck it up and go with a different red.

Just to make sure you all don't think that my loss is trivial, that pen definitely predates my dog and my two kids, and I think my wife too.

FWIW: You can often find older, out of production or reduced price inventory from 'stationery' and 'office supplies' categories on eBay.

Not good! I suggest that you sell your entire collection and go to the Himalayas seeking an audience with the Dalai Lama.

By the way, when you're ready to leave, please let me know. I have a coin I want delivered to him, but I'm too cheap to pay the postage.

PS. I felt the same way about my fatigue jacket I'd had since 1969. I finally decided to send it to the cleaners about 5 years ago, and it disintegrated during the process.

I am so sorry about your loss. I will call Rev. Sharpie to conduct a funeral at Bic and Sons.

That is cheap. I found a Pentel pencil many years ago. I have literally worn out 2 of them - I mean worn a hole in them. They quit making them back in the 80's. I found some on eBay, but apparently I am not the only one who likes them. They go for ~$15 and still have the obligatory $7 shipping.

Alright, Coin Talk is officially full of weirdos and I withdraw my application to be on the forum. I admit I'm weird for mourning a pen. I've posted a copy of what a modern day clone looks like. Not quite like my beloved but....

I'll write HER epitaph right here...
Pensive...why thank you, I was going for a pentabulous obit, but pensive is alright too.
As for inkling, I've got no smart mouth comeback on that one.

While your loss is admittedly tragic, it opens the door to new possibilities. One being pen collecting. You may have to search far and wide, collecting many pens, to find the one that best fulfills your needs. Imagine the endless hours of pleasure you will receive from grading them --- extra fine, fine, medium fine, about fine and on, and on, and on. Multiply this by the numbers of colors available, and new ones yet to come on-line, and you will be happily occupied forever. To add to the excitement, you can even have some of them slabbed. Visualize how impressed people will be when you show them your slabbed pen collection.

Count your blessings. Your cup is more than half full. By using this opportunity wisely, you have a bright and enterprising future ahead of you. Continue to remain optimistic and you will do well.

Is that a "nine" on the "tension" scale?

A bit of advice from my own experience: when you find a new pen you like, go out and buy a dozen of them, or more. You won't get 10 years out of any of the modern pens.

Oh come on! Buy the pens! With S&H the price is about right. Since they match, they'd be worth many times that price.

Ten years is amazing. I buy pens for work and some right out of the pack are dead. The others barely last two weeks.

yea, i got 3 packs of papermates and all of the red pack are dead! and half of the blue and black packs are also!

so i went shopping for good pens. i got the one from pilot called "ball frixion", its erasable by friction! i also got one called "silk" it writes so smooth. the best one is by sharpy, its not a marker but an actual pen! i love it!

my girl got me some $40 pen, she didn't give it to me yet. its for our 7 year dating anniversary

Yep! Has anyone else noticed, aside from the Chinese counterfeit coins, we've been introduced to a new level of absolute crap products produced in China - not to mention the poisoned ones. I buy American whenever possible!
