    1) Yes, to both.

    2) Indian head (Buffalo) nickel. No other design is as uniquely American as both images on this coin.

    3) Auction catalogs

    4) Never. I've sold two coins in the past 28 years of collecting, both at a loss, and could have cared less. I profit in fun and learning.

    5) Collect what you like, regardless of what everyone else is collecting. Have fun.

    Of course!

(Mike - other than our esteemed and anomalous non-collecting numismatic scholar GDJMSP, do you seriously expect to get negative answers to this question from members of CoinTalk?)

The gold 1986-87 Japanese ¥100,000 60th Year of Imperial Reign. The simplicity of the obverse chrysanthemum symbol, coupled with the intricate detailing of the reverse blows my mind.

    [IMG][IMG]

Of course it's far more beautiful in full color than
can be discerned in these Numismaster.com pictures.

The annual Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association Catalog.

Profit is not a factor in any of my hobby activities.

Find a numismatic area that you enjoy studying about, and then intensively study it while carefully building your collection.

Buy at least two different Grading Guides, along with a Counterfeit Detection book.
and to a lesser extent a RedBook for mintage numbers and learning the key dates of each series. Become a member of this forum and remember all coin collectors started at the beginning with little knowledge so do not be nervous about asking questions.

    1) Do you actively collect coins and/or currency?
    Yes

    2) What is your favorite coin design and why?
I have fallen in love with Laura Frasier's 1932 Quarter chosen to be the Washington Commemorative that year.
It was legally chosen, only to be summarily bumped by the Mint Director who thought it was out of a woman's place to design a coin. My avatar is a 1994 gold $5 proof modified to look as a 32-98 proof quarter would look like if she'd been treated fairly. The reverse is gorgeous too. The entire design puts Flannigan's 32-98 quarter to shame.

    3) What is your favorite money-related reference material?
    Any. None in particular.

    4) Do you buy with expectations of realizing a profit on your collection?
    No.

    5) What is the best advice that you can give to a new collector?
Stay away from problem coins... no matter how tempting they are.

Shop around, there are more examples available than you can imagine.

    5 Questions:

    1) Do you actively collect coins and/or currency?
    Yes, Coins

    2) What is your favorite coin design and why?
Many, Constantine "Hand of God", Ostrogothic "Roma Invictus", any Carthaginian, most Celtic

    3) What is your favorite money-related reference material?
Also many, DOC, BMC, Grierson "Byzantine Coins", etc etc. Favorite fun book is Robinson's "Confessions of a Numismatic Fanatic"

    4) Do you buy with expectations of realizing a profit on your collection?
I try to buy at good prices for the item, but I buy for my own self education, not to resell. My wife will get all of the profits. :)

    5) What is the best advice that you can give to a new collector?
God gave you 2 ears and one mouth for a reason. Listen to advanced collectors, take their advice to heart. Believe it or not they were once beginners too, and truly wish to help you. Also, money spent on good books is never a waste, and usually a better investment in many ways than the coins they cover.

    1) Do you actively collect coins and/or currency?

    Yes

    2) What is your favorite coin design and why?

Jefferson Nickel. Thomas Jefferson is my favorite President and his image on the nickel is one that embodies his strength and resolve. Monticello is a beautiful building designed by Jefferson himself which served as his estate.

    3) What is your favorite money-related reference material?

    Heritage Auction Archives

    4) Do you buy with expectations of realizing a profit on your collection?

No, but I plan to lose no more than the traditional transaction costs (15%) with the exception of some rainbow toned coins for which I paid large premiums.

    5) What is the best advice that you can give to a new collector?

Many believe that you need big money to assembe a great collection. In my experience, passion is the key to a great collection. Have passion in what you collect and you will be more inclined to learn and become knowledgeable before you buy. In addition, your pride in your collection will force you to adhere to your own strict standards of excellence rather than filling your holes with dreck. In other words, your pride will force you to be patient which has long been a virtue in coin collecting.

Be passionate about your collection and you shall discover excellence no matter what your budget.
