Hey I came across this little bit of information and I just wanted to throw it out there for discussion. Have you ever viewed collecting coins as an addiction? Anyone? Well I have but just joking around of course! I never really took (coins) and (addiction) seriously together in a single thought or sentence. I think shopping on ebay could be more of an addiction than the actual act of collecting coins but I don't know, what do you think? http://www.addictionz.com/addictions.htm Coin collecting * Usually a nice hobby but any hobby can become a compulsion in the hands of a multiple addict * Expensive and can produce a gamblers adrenalin high by overestimating the value of finds * Adrenalin is addictive and progressive so greater finds must be made.
Absolutely! What is it, you ask? It's not following your own interests and desires, instead letting someone else tell you what and how to collect.
I found myself on a buying frenzy.Everything and anything.Only one coin within my collecting interests.I have decided to stay away from ebay for awile.
haha i bet! I myself do get addicted infact i am addicted. When i use to order $10-20 of penny to search for wheat... i would say ok ill search 2-4 rolls today and rest tommorow ect...i end up doing the whole rolls and then make me want to go get more :'( Especially when i buy in ebay i tend to be like ok this my last coin ima buy for the month i keep buying one coin each week at least. My family calls me crazy and stupid
haha Derekg, I just spent $20 dollars on ebay this week buying singles that i needed for my collection.
I think searching for a "deal" can be addicting. I think this could be a serious problem for some people. Maybe I am included, I have groups of coins all over that I don't remember buying, still in their vendor packaging.
Definitely, do not collect coins by taking them from other collectors or dealers without paying for them.
I completely agree. Some of the purchases that have brought me the most pleasure are items that violate some rule.
Are you cruising down the dark alleys of your town Cloud? Just kidding. I KNOW I should limit myself to certain collections and specialties like everyone says, its just too much fun buying whatever I feel like at the moment. Its a hobby, enjoy yourself.
It depends on what you mean with "addicted". To read more about coins, to study them, to learn about their history, and to be busy with coins - these are all positive actions putting you in connection with the past, and all the facets of history. Collecting coins is enriching. (Addiction is negative!) Enjoy every moment of it! I wish I could see your coins...
One golden rule I go by is buy the best grade/condition you can afford, although today the ultra high grade uncs/proofs appear to be over priced. If you can't afford high grades for all your purchases, not to worry, as there is demand for some coins in lower grades. So, you at least need to know what grades are market acceptable for which coins. Not all coins need to be unc and not all coins are collectable in lower grades.
I think to collect is to be addicted. Whether it be an addiction to the coins or the history, or both, I think it takes an addictive behavior to become a true collector. Thats not a bad thing. If there weren't addicts like us around there wouldn't have been any preservation of history throughout the years. Guy~
Agreed, addiction is not necessarily bad. Just because you crave something does not make it unhealthy. Not trying to be cliche, but most of us are addicted to love. Us on this website just happen to be addicted to collecting as well. Man, that paragraph just brought back Robert Plant, big hair, and neon light flashbacks.
Only when it's not Football season. The sorting, roll searching, shopping can all wait for the 19-20 weeks NFL lasts. I don't really count pre-season, but that interferes with the coins, just not as much.
