These are two 1970s cents. I tried comparing the pictures to others, but I still can't tell
if both are large date (which is what I'm leaning towards) or small date. Thanks for the help!

I don't know about others, but I get warnings, as those links are trying to open websites. If you'd like an opinion, try posting actual pics.

I wasn't able to see the pics either. But I have posted a couple of threads on this and looked at a couple of hundred 1970 S coins that I have and viewed website pics. I have scanned and magnified coins until I was blue in the face and some look like possibilities but without an actual certified comparison coin, I cannot tell. Some that are sold on eBay are very questionable in my opinion. Personally, in time I do plan to purchase a certified coin. But there is just too much to look at first.

I think that's what you will probably need to do to.

See them now, but I can't tell except that I have some that are identical to those And the "Liberty" does not seem to weaken enough ? IMHO
    Good luck

After looking at those pics again, I'd say the 2nd coin is a small date. But I'd like to see a closer pic of its date. Can you take a straight on pic of only it's date?

I'll agree on the 1st one, but what's your reasoning on the 2nd? The 9 may have a sharp point to the right, can't tell from the pic.

I don't see how the second one could possibly look like a small date to you. The 7 is clearly below the 9 and 0.

    Both are large dates.

That picture leaves a lot to be desired, but I think I see no notch in the 7, the top tail of the 9 pointing to the right, and the bottom tail of the 9 being pointed. Those are all signs of a small date. Plus, when I hold a straight edge across the date, the 7 looks level to me.

If the OP will read http://www.cointalk.com/t93080/, maybe he can determine for himself.

Well, like I said, I'd like to see better pics of it, but I invite opinion. Pics of the date that size can be deceiving and you can see the 2nd coin appears to have a different variety of date from the first. The seven may be level on top and its bottom appears to be much more level with the 0 than the 1st coin - the 7 also appears to be the correct font. The 9 also appear to have a sharp point toward the right. It wasn't until I bought a certified small date that I could clearly tell the difference.

Both appear to be large dates.

And, as far as the weak Liberty goes, I have a PCGS MS64 that appears to be an early strike that has a fairly strong liberty.

I like to use the bottom of the 7, it goes well below the bottom of the 0 on the large date.

I just saved and enlarged the pic - it enlarges pretty well and it's looking more like a small date. Like RLM mentioned, no notch in the 7, the correct font for a small date and the 9 appears to be pointed right. But I'll wait for a better pic to say for sure.

Looking at the 7 and 0, it looks like a large date.
Looking at the tail of the 9, it looks like it might curve to the right, but not as significantly as on the pictures of an actual small date.
Looking at the distance of the mintmark from the 9, it looks more like the picture of a small date (but I don't know if that is any sort of indicator)

Here is another picture (don't know if it helps though)

Well, that's not a pic of a small date. Mint mark doesn't matter as I believe they were still placed by hand in 1970, so they're all over the place.

You know, I have many of those, almost appears to be a 3rd variety, since it's not a small date and appears to be different than other large dates. Could a 3rd variety be the cause of so much confusion out there?

The 4 things I look for...

The following pictures are now the 4 areas I look at when trying to determine large from small date.
1.) the hook of the 9 pointing clearly to the east.
2.) the front of the base of the 7 is never sheared or blunted on the small date as is always the case with the large date.
3.) the top right hand portion of the 7 on the small date will have a sudden slope towards the SE.
4.) the shaped of the 0 on the small date is more uniform while the date on the large date is most frequently shaped like an egg.
