This place has some very good photographers. They always make the worse coin look great.
I have a decent camera but no lighting studio.

What section do I post a pic of a foreign coin for ID?

    Thanks,

Well, I thought someone would catch on quick by looking in the CPG. It's a multi-denominational clash.

In 1857 there were three multi-denominational clashed die FE cents. Snow 7, 8 and 9.

The S-8 cent die was clashed with the die used for the quarter above.
The S-7 cent was clashed with the Double Eagle gold piece.
The S-9 cent was clashed with the Seated Liberty Half.

The quarter is like the forth piece to this set. I have been looking for a nice one for over 10 years.
No Double Eagle or Seated Half coins have been found with the matching clash.

A normal 1857 quarter in EF will bring $20 to $50. This one brought about $500.
I had hopes that no one else spotted what it was and I bid too low.

I'll bet the seller was shocked at what it sold for but it could have brought just south of $1000.
He didn't know what it was. For this seller I find that funny.
He is probably just now figuring out how bad he messed up.

Can someone point the blind man to what we're looking at?

Also, ldhair what's CPG? I'd be interested in seeing the 1857 half dollar die clash.

This is a better image of the same clash. Rick Snow posted these way back to help folks understand the clash.

And here - I did some work to show you how the clash would look if you imposed both coins-

Thanks budgood, do ya happen to have any pictures of the 1857 cent superimposed on the 1857 half dollar reverse?

Edit: nevermind, I guess the only clash was on the obverse.

    clashed reverse die
    .....

but the price was still not what I'd call a "deal"..... even for this variety.

... GSC is good at shilling thier stuff to the point at which even a rare variety slips through and sells for about retail price..

While I did not catch this variety until you told us this is a perfect example of why I search a lot of auctions on ebay. To do a little cherry picking for some varieties. I am not very successful, but it only takes 1. :) And yes I would even buy from GSC for something like this. :) Too bad you did not win.

    Budgood,

I noticed that you have a sharp eye for subtle differences. You saw the clash here and the difference in the Lettered Edge on the S-65s. I bet you had no problem finding Waldo either. (or does that date me now?)

    Well, Thanks-
I try to do my best , this is not just a hobby for me it is what I do.
    I spend A LOT of time researching,attributing, & cataloging coins- 100's a week.

I was pretty good at finding Waldo back then- now I get to do it with my 3yr old.
