What does it mean when a quarter is "SMS" graded by NGC? I searched online, but all I got was SMS messaging rates lol. It's dated 1965 if that makes any difference.

The Mint did not produce any Proof Sets for the years 1965-1967. Instead, they issued the Special Mint Sets.

Thanks, cpm. Is it the same quality of a proof with just a different name? Or is it of a lesser quality?

They are more like the Uncirculated Mint Sets, but there are PL coins that have come from the SMS.

No. They were made on highly polished planchets, but not proof planchets. They lack the mirror shine, and sharp relief that a proof has.

Chris, it's true that a 67 SMS is the hardest tofind? (Trying to buy another set and having trouble)

Numis, you talking about Harlan J. Berk? (stating that because it's $10 and $6 for shipping?)..unless I was buying many I doubt I would spend that much.

But it is worth noting that some few Cameo and Deep Cameo examples exist among the SMS issues.

SMS's are essentially mint set coins struck by proof dies.

This same process was used for later mint sets except few of the dies were processed like proofs.

If you follow any of my posts at all, you would know Ibuy only locally near me and not from the net.

The price is $16, plus postage. I can give you the link and you can decide.

Yes they do. I didn't mean to infer there wasn't CAMs and DCAMs in the SMS.

Remember when you guys discuss price to realize most of these sets have already been viewed by dealers. You get what you pay for.

How much would a 1965 quarter from a SMS cost? It's graded ms66, but doesn't seem to be a cameo. Thanks for all the help guys!
