Well I thought this looked a little strange please give me your thoughts if this is an error. It weights 4.83g and has strange circular markings on front and back

post mint damage, most likely from a vending machine, the type where you put the coin in a slot and then turn it to get it to dispense the product.

While I agree with the post mint damage part.. I have another theory on this coin.. I knew a gentleman who passed away several years ago that assembled a complete set of Mercury Dimes with this same marking on them.. What caused it? A little thumbscrew that was used in a bank that held 50 dimes.. While I have not seen one made for nickels, I would bet there was some made because the dime bank was pretty popular.

Wow.. I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent looking at mercury dimes trying to figure out why so many had the little circles on them. Where could I find more info on this bank?

There were a bunch of companies that made them back in the 50's. Joe Garbinini is the one that told me about them. I went on ebay and looked them up, then started hitting flea markets. Took me one summer of flea market shopping to find my first one.. Most were tossed in the garbage I think.. Here is one on ebay right now.. I dont know this person nor do I endorse them.. http://cgi.ebay.com/Little-Gem-Dime...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a092d46d7

Once you have one i n hand and try a dime in it.. its obvious how it happens.. the little screw thingie on the top goes in and swirls the top of the top coin.. Doesnt work to great on the clads. (Yea I had to try it).. I never got to see Joes collection but can you imagine a 1916D with the swirl.. The one that I posted is the 1896S, its no slouch...

Did the bank use this device to then roll the coins or was it strictly to organize and count a certain amount?

The banks were generally promotional items given to people. They would hold 50 dimes.. Most of the ones that I have seen have company names on them like the one I listed that is on ebay. (or was)
