ok so im new to this forum and i have searched the internet a lot and havent been able to find anything. i got a gold colored coin, on the front it has a pic of a man holding a shovel, and a caption on the left side that says, "When most needed1828 1979" and on the right side it says, "Gold". Also at the bottem right edge about the 5oclock position it says "HAS" On the back, it appears to be a person working some sort of machine thats stamped 1828 and around the top(back) of the coin it says, "The town that restored the faith of a nation" and the bottem(back), "Dahlonega Georgia" The coin is in a sealed plastic coin protector, as if its wroth something, I dont know much about this, i found this at my grandparents so any input is apprieciated. These pics are not great but its what I have thanks
Your piece is not a coin. It appears to be a token/medallion honoring Dahlonega, GA, site of a short-lived US Mint specializing in gold coins.
Unless it's gold or silver, probably not much. There are collectors of historical medallions, but locating one who really wants yours would be pretty hard. I'm not sure what you mean by "real". It is obviously a real medallion and equally obviously not a coin.
I think he meant "real" gold... Probably the easiest thing to do would be to take it to a jeweler/coin shop and/or look for a stamp. If it is a newer medallion (and it appears to be), it would have to be marked if it was real gold. If you have a piece of unglazed dark colored ceramic, you could rub it on that. If it leaves a gold colored mark, it is (at the least) gold plated, if not solid gold.
