I would think you have a shot, but the scans are just not clear enough to know for sure. Now, if you are asking if the is THE doubled die, that answer is no.
Thanks for those who responded, it means a great deal to hear your opinions.. BADTHAD your right, I do need a new printer lol, I've had this one since 2005 and haven't had the time or money to invest in one.. RIM'S CENT.. when you say "I WOULD THINK YOU HAVE A SHOT" what do you mean? Is it worthy enough to get attention to maybe consider this as a 3rd Varitie.. there is only 2 types as for now. If so, what would your grade be on this coin and what price do you think it should be set at if i was to action this Lincoln Penny? I have offers from several people at different sites asking to buy my coin but as for now, I need to really know it's true value to set a fair price.. On "CPG" they value the 1958 DDO for a ms65 RD at 140k... I'm not saying that I have that particular coin but I've been collecting for 12 years now and I would hope iI know the difference between Double Die and Double Strike... Thanks for helping me out guys, please respond back with what you think the category, grade, and value of this coin would be even if it's not "THE" Double Die
I cannot tell for sure if it is or is not a doubled die, but I can make out more than one interesting point. Any more than that, I will have to leave to your eyes in hand. Grade wise, I would guess at 64.
Rim's Cent Thanks for your honest opinion, to be honest myself, I've always been the collector type but now money is low and I need to start getting my investment back. So now I've been double guessing myself about what i should do next and where I should go.. any advice?
I assume that by the 2 varieties you mean the ext. rare FS-01-1958-001 and the one coppercoins.com lists as 1958P-1DO-001 which is a type 5, which Coneca, nor any other Lincoln source I know lists. The first is debated as whether it actually was put into circulation by normal means or not, and the second one is est. at around $10 in BU+. I would be doubtful of any new varieties seeing the fervor people started checking this issue after the news of a 1958 DDO became headlines. That said, which areas lead you to think DD? can you take a photo of these areas through your loupe or magnifier, as said above , it is difficult to see small detail. Jim
I think I am seeing something on the BERT, 95, and IN GOD WE TR. I am far from your expertise, but that seems to me to be a lot of areas for it to be MD. It seems to be clearer on the blue picture.
I certainly can say it appears that there might be something there, but being the grade it is, it could also be glare or reflection at the base of the letters. Better close ups would certainly help deciding. I was just pointing out that the odds are against it. Rollin mints, you said , did they see the coin in hand or was it from the same photos? You might also want to post on http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/index.php Jim
This is the 140K coin: You do not have this one. If anything at all, your coin would have a value equivalent to what it gets professionally graded at -50%. In other words, if there is doubling there, it is very slight which translates into a very "slight" premium if any at all.
Send it to James Wiles at CONECA. If it's a doubled die he'll let you know. He can even forward it to ANACS for slabbing but my guess is if it is a DDO, it's a very minor DDO at the most. More than likely, it's machine doubling.
