This is my little collection i got running since im 16 no1 really cares about coin collecting except me lol. Not my family nor friends :'(!! but im glad i can show off here These are the new quarters Yellowstone and Hot springs this one is just random
Nice looking coins, on the bottom. I do not collect the newer quarters, but if you really want your coins to look their best you may want to stop holding them that way. The correct way to hold coins, is not to hold them at all. If you're just gonna hold them for a pic, you may want to just use your forefinger and your thumb and hold the coin by the rims. Welcome, you've come to the right place if you want to collect coins. Take a look around, there are many collectors of half dollars on this forum, I have a couple of pages myself.
^What he said. Also, there are very inexpensive holders for coins like yours. They are white cardboard with plastic "windows" cut to the exact size of the coin. They are called "Two-by-twos" because they are two inches by two inches. Your coin store should carry them for about $2 per 100. Just put the coin in and staple them shut. Because of the plastic windows you can still see the coin just fine, but it protects them from fingerprints, wear, etc. Welcome to the hobby.
thanks guy =) i will take your advice although where i live theirs no coin collecting store whatsoever so i usually buy everything on ebay as thats where i've gotten mostly all my coins except the new coins hopefully they make a coin shop here soon ebay really tend to take high sky prices:|
Another word of advice: A lot of us have sworn ebay off as there are a LOT of con artists who sell there. You really have to be an expert to buy on there without getting burned. I suggest you be very careful at least, and only buy certified coins from ebay. Get a Red Book and know the value of what you're bidding on. Don't get sucked in to a bidding war with someone; you'll end up paying too much. Or you could swear off ebay altogether Look at this site: http://www.hallenbeck-coins.com/ The owner is on the board for the ANA, and is one of the editors of the Red Book. They will not rip you off. They also have a LOT more in their inventory than what's on their site. If you're looking for something specific just shoot them an email if you don't see what you're after. A lot of what's on the site is middle to high end stuff you're probably not collecting at this point in your development of the hobby. No fear, they have less expensive stuff, too. Like I said, shoot them an email. Others will chime in with their favorite dealers, I'm sure.
Same can be said for a lot of us older ones also. Nice start to a collection - just take your time learning. And some books will certainly help you start. Enjoy!
Welcome! If you have the chance to travel up the road a bit, there are coin shows in San Antonio twice a year or so. I think you'd enjoy one.
Welcome! For me, the hobby started with a 1941 Lincoln cent I found in pocket change 18 years ago and I haven't looked back since. One of the first things I did was READ, READ, READ and expand my knowledge of the hobby. We now have the internet, and can be just as great for informing oneself... But do yourself a favor and still at least buy the current edition of "A Guide Book of United States Coins," (also called "The Red Book") by Kenneth Bressett and R.S. Yeoman. All the best to you in your coin collecting endeavors, and never hesitate to post any questions you have to the forum!
Hey cool, nice to meet you. I'm collecting the same things that you are, Derekg. It's pretty cool finding another 16 year old out there that collects coins.
Derek: Welcome to CT! You have a few nice silver halves there. You may consider asking for rolls of half dollars at the bank at face value and search for the ones with silver (1964 and earlier: 90%; 1965-1970: 40%). While you are there ask if they have any Ike dollars as well. Good luck! TC
