USA's Largest Denomination Paper Currency The largest denomination of USA currency ever printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) was the $100,000 Series 1934 Gold Bank Transfer Note featuring the portrait of President Wilson. These notes were printed from December 18, 1934 through January 9, 1935 and were issued by the Treasurer of the United States to Federal Reserve Banks only against an equal amount of gold bullion on deposit with the Treasury Department. The notes were used only for official transactions between Federal Reserve Banks and were not circulated among the general public. Want to see a Photo of one? (photo courtesy of FRBSF's American Currency Exhibit webSite) http://www.frbsf.org/currency/world/bankxfer/m2.html Here's a bit more "trivia" about the $100,000 Bank Transfer Note: The $100,000 bill was released only as a Gold Certificate so designated within the overprint of the seal reading: GOLD THIS CERTIFICATE IS LEGAL TENDER IN THE AMOUNT THEREOF IN PAYMENT OF ALL DEBTS AND DUES, PUBLIC OR PRIVATE. CERTIFICATE As you've already probably deduced, the bottom word "CERTIFICATE" is curved and not straight. Printed in the series of 1934. Today it is equal to $1,620,000 in 2010 dollars. It featured Woodrow Wilson on the front and a gold back that said $100,000. There is one on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History Thought you should know... Clinker
Often at larger shows the BEP will have their "Billion dollar exhibit" and they have examples of the $100K note on display including if I recall, two uncut sheets.
Clinker: Another great TRIVIA thread. I admire that you have done one on paper currency! You might also take note of some activities in the Paper Money forum of CT amongst the 2010 Security Engravers Group as presentations on paper money topics have filled the first half of the year and a reformed group are preparing for the next phase with a new member list, new identity and many great new ideas going forward... Thanks again for your splendid TRIVIA presentations! They are always a pleasure to read and refer back to. :thumb:
Hi krispy, Remember one of my past currency posts were on my 1935 birthyear $1 Silver Certificates and my post on "Short Snorters." Clinker
Hey, I knew if I read enough of your posts I'd find one I actually knew about already!! I've held one of these uncut sheets before and it was stupendous!! And the one I held was from the billion dollar collection. SN#A00000000A!! Thanks for the write up and I do think you'd be a shoe in for the SEG's Group from all your great posts.
