I was searching through pocket change the other day and I found this 1935-S Lincoln cent. I was sorry to the see that the obverse was in pretty bad shape. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what could have caused this damage to the coin. I know cleaning coins is generally a bad idea but is there any way to save this coin or is it just too far gone?

To me it's to far gone but not a bad coin to fill in a slot. The black residue could be years of dirt or maybe someone took a sharpie to it. Not sure if acetone would work but I imagine another member will comment on it.

The coin is badly corroded - it's toast.

looks like it spent some time in the ground.

I have a 1912 nickel with the same black gunk on it, nothing will take that hard as nails stuff off, so it's not from the copper.

Looks like it sat in soda pop for a while. Find them like that all the time in my girlfriends car.

Have you tasted it yet? lol
